Getting Around Gadag

Gadag-Betageri is a twin city in Gadag district, Karnataka, and the administrative headquarters of the district. Its old town, where the main temple cluster sits, is compact enough to explore on foot, while the wider town is best covered by auto-rickshaw. The city is well served by rail and road links to the rest of north Karnataka and beyond, and Kannada is the main language spoken here, with English and Hindi understood by relatively few people.

On Foot

Walking is the most practical way to see Gadag's historic core. The old town, with its main temple cluster, is compact and can be explored on foot. The temples of Veera Narayana and Trikuteshwara are places of religious and historic importance and are the obvious anchors of a walking visit.

Auto-Rickshaws

Auto-rickshaws are the easiest way to get around the wider town and to and from the railway station and bus stand. They can also be hired for a half-day trip out to Lakkundi, which is a convenient way to visit the Kasivisvesvara temple there without relying on scheduled transport.

Rail

Gadag Junction railway station is a major junction on the Hubballi–Hospet–Guntakal line, and it also has a branch line running north toward Bagalkot–Vijayapura and on to Solapur in Maharashtra. The station is well connected to Hubballi, Hospet (the access point for Hampi) and Bengaluru, and has direct or overnight trains toward Mumbai, Hyderabad and other major cities. Smaller stations at Balaganur and Kanginhal also serve the town. For a visitor, this means Gadag can be reached directly by train from several major cities, and Hubballi and Hospet are straightforward short hops for onward connections.

Buses and Other Public Transport

KSRTC buses link Gadag's bus stand with Hubballi, Dharwad, Bengaluru, Belagavi, Vijayapura and other towns across north Karnataka. Private operators also run services on the busier routes. The bus stand and the railway station are the two main transport hubs, and auto-rickshaws are the easiest way to move between them and the rest of the town.

By Road

National Highway 63 (Ankola–Gooty) passes through Gadag town, and NH 218 passes nearby through Nargund, so the city sits on useful road corridors for travellers arriving by bus or private vehicle.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

The source material does not describe app-based ride-hailing or conventional taxi services in Gadag. In practice, auto-rickshaws are the main on-demand option for getting around town and for reaching the railway station and bus stand.

Getting There from the Airport

Gadag has no airport of its own. The nearest airport is Hubballi Airport (IATA: HBX), about 60–65 km away, with a limited schedule of domestic flights. Belagavi Airport is a further option, about 125–130 km away. Travellers from outside the region often fly into Bengaluru or Hubballi and continue by train or road. From Hubballi, the onward leg to Gadag is easily done by train or by KSRTC bus, both of which connect the two cities.
