Getting Around Chikmagalur

Chikmagalur sits in the foothills of the Western Ghats in Karnataka, and getting around it is mostly a matter of road transport. The city itself is compact, but many of its best-known sights — hill peaks, coffee estates, temples and wildlife areas — lie outside town, so how you move depends on whether you are staying local or heading into the surrounding hills.

How Tourists Move Around

Within the city, short hops are typically made by autorickshaw, and for full days of sightseeing or trips to nearby places such as Kemmannagundi, visitors generally hire a tourist cab. Because the attractions are spread across the district, many travellers treat a car and driver as their base mode of transport rather than relying on point-to-point public transport.

Rail Network

Chikmagalur has a railway station served by South Western Railway. A railway line connects Chikmagalur railway station to Kadur Junction railway station, and passenger trains are available from Shimoga and Kadur. There is no metro or tram network in the city — rail and road are the two modes of transportation available here.

Buses and Public Transport

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) provides inter-state, inter-city and intra-city bus services to the city. The Chikmagalur division of KSRTC operates several depots, including some in Hassan district. Buses from other Karnataka transport corporations travelling to the pilgrimage town of Dharmasthala pass through the Charmadi Ghat, which gives the city good connectivity with cities of northern Karnataka such as Hubli, Ballari, Bijapur and Kalaburagi.

From further afield, Chikmagalur is on the highway from Hassan towards Sringeri and has regular luxury as well as ordinary buses from Bangalore. Ordinary buses connect the town to Mysore and Hassan, with a single service to Kozhikode. Buses from interior Karnataka heading towards Mangalore also pass via Chikmagalur, so ordinary buses link the town regularly to Dharmasthala, Mangalore, Shimoga, Davanagere and Sringeri.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Tourist cabs are described as the best choice if you want to tour the city all day or visit nearby places like Kemmannagundi, with costs of about ₹10 per kilometre. You can also hire a taxi or rent a car from Bangalore to visit Chikmagalur; outstation car rental companies typically charge for a minimum of 250 km per day at a per-kilometre rate plus driver charges (boarding and travel allowance), and fares depend on the type of car. It is advisable to rent from reliable and established car rental operators.

Autorickshaws

Autorickshaw drivers in Chikmagalur do not go by meters. Instead, they fix a charge for the place you want to go, and bargaining is up to you. Be aware that the more your attire and luggage announce that you are a tourist, the greater the chance of drivers charging you more.

Walkability

The source material does not describe Chikmagalur as a walking-oriented destination. Given that the city sits at an elevation in the Western Ghats foothills and that key attractions lie outside town, walking is best treated as a way to cover short distances in the city centre rather than as a primary way to reach the region's sights.

Getting There from the Airport

The nearest international airport is Mangalore International Airport (IXE), about 170 km away. Bangalore airport (BLR) is roughly 250 km away. There is no metro or rail link from either airport into Chikmagalur; arrivals by air typically continue by road, whether by bus, taxi or rented car.

Getting There by Road and Rail

By road, Chikmagalur is connected via NH-173 (formerly KM Road), which passes through the town and links it to the port city of Mangalore. State Highway 57 connects the city to Mysore via Hassan in the south and to Shimoga (via Lingadahalli) in the north. Part of SH-57 south of Chikmagalur has been upgraded to NH-373 up to Bilikere, though a major construction project is still awaited. If you are driving yourself, Chikmagalur can be reached comfortably by road from Hassan, which in turn is connected to Bangalore.

By train, the practical approach is to arrive at Kadur Junction or Shimoga and continue to Chikmagalur by passenger train.
