Orientation
Ulhasnagar sits in Thane district within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, just off the Mumbai–Pune highway, a short drive from Kalyan and Thane. The city is compact and organised into numbered sections known as camp numbers (No. 1–5), which makes it fairly easy to navigate once you get your bearings. Camp 3 Market Area is a key transport hub, with buses and auto-rickshaws gathering there, and the railway station is another focal point for onward travel.
Getting Around the City
Auto-rickshaws are the main form of local transport and the most practical option for short-to-medium distances. Shared autos run fixed routes between the station and the main markets. Cycle-rickshaws are less common and are found mainly in local market areas, suited to very short trips. Public transport generally runs from roughly 4:00 AM to 1:00 AM, with high frequency during peak hours (8–11 AM and 5–8 PM) and regular service off-peak.
Rail Network
Ulhasnagar has its own station on the Central line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, with frequent "local train" service. Kalyan Junction is the key regional hub for longer-distance train connections. You can buy single-journey tickets at counters or via the UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) mobile app, and daily, weekly and monthly passes are available. Avoid travelling during morning and evening rush hours, when crowding is extreme.
Metro and Tram
There is no metro or tram system in Ulhasnagar. Rail travel here means the suburban railway, and everything else is road-based.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Transport (KDMT) operates local buses within Ulhasnagar and connects the city to Kalyan and Dombivli. State transport and private buses also link Ulhasnagar to Thane, Kalyan and Pune. Bus tickets are bought from the conductor, and routes can be hard to find in English, so ask locals or conductors for help. Stops are located near the railway station and the major markets.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Yellow-and-black metered taxis operate in the area, though they are more common in Kalyan and Mumbai; confirm that the meter is being used or agree on a fare in advance. Ola and Uber operate in Ulhasnagar. Cash is the main payment method generally, with in-app payment also available. App-based services are considered safer because drivers are verified and trips are tracked. For travellers with mobility challenges, app-based taxis or private cars are more suitable than public transport, which involves crowded staircases and few ramps.
Car and Two-Wheeler Rental
Self-drive rentals are available from Mumbai (Zoomcar, Myles, Avis) and require an International Driving Permit plus your home-country licence. Self-driving is not recommended for tourists; hiring a car with a driver is the alternative. Motorcycle and scooter rentals are uncommon and informal, and bicycle sharing or rentals are not available. Note that traffic drives on the left, horn use is frequent, road rules are loosely followed, and inner-city roads vary in quality and are often congested and narrow.
Walking
Walking is feasible in market areas such as Camp 3 market and in residential lanes, but there are no organised guided walking tours. There is no dedicated bicycle infrastructure, and cycling on main roads is not recommended. Avoid major highways and congested main roads at rush hour, and take caution on poorly lit or isolated streets after dark.
Getting There from the Airport
The nearest airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, about two hours away by road depending on traffic. By road, Ulhasnagar is just off the Mumbai–Pune highway (NH 48, formerly NH 4), roughly a short drive from Kalyan and Thane, with state transport and private buses connecting it to Thane, Kalyan and Pune. By rail, the city's suburban station on the Central line links it into the Mumbai Suburban Railway network, with Kalyan Junction serving as the hub for longer-distance connections.
What Is Not Available
Beyond the absence of metro and tram service, Ulhasnagar has no tour buses, hop-on-hop-off services, boat or water transport, cable cars or funiculars.
