Getting Around Thane: A Practical Transport Guide
Thane is a major city in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, well-connected by rail, bus, and local transport services. As a visitor, you'll find several ways to move around the city, though the options vary depending on where you're coming from and how familiar you are with local systems.
Arriving from Mumbai Airport
If you're flying in, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai is the nearest airport. The journey to Thane is approximately 36 km and typically takes between 45 and 75 minutes depending on traffic conditions.
By taxi: The most straightforward option is to use the prepaid taxi service available at the airport. This is recommended as a hassle-free approach. The fare includes tolls, so there are no surprises during the journey.
By train: For budget-conscious travellers, local trains offer an alternative. Take an auto-rickshaw from the airport to either Kurla or Ghatkopar station (both on the Central Railway Line). From there, board any northbound suburban train—all local trains stop at Thane. A direct Thane-bound train (marked with a "T" abbreviation on digital displays) is your best option, as it avoids the need to change trains at Dadar. The auto-rickshaw to these stations costs around ₹60–70, slightly more than going to Andheri station (₹40–50), but you save significant travel time and avoid transfers.
By car: Two main roads connect Mumbai to Thane: Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg (LBS Marg) and the Eastern Express Highway. Both are toll roads with a one-way toll of ₹30. The Eastern Express Highway is wider and better-maintained, making it the preferable driving route despite being slightly longer.
By bus: Very few direct buses run to central Thane from Mumbai. A few BEST buses (399 and 496) go as far as Marathon Chowk (Teen Hath Naka), from where you can catch a local auto-rickshaw or TMT bus to reach specific destinations.
Railway Network
Thane is a major railway hub with a rich transport history. The city was the terminus of Asia's first passenger train service, inaugurated in 1853. Today, it remains one of India's busiest stations.
Thane is connected to neighbouring suburbs via the Central and Trans-Harbour Line suburban railway network. The city is a railway junction serving the Thane-Vashi & Panvel Harbour Line and the Central Line, providing connections to various parts of the greater Mumbai region.
Long-distance trains also serve Thane station, making it convenient for arriving from other parts of the country.
Metro System
A metro line is currently being built between Wadala and Thane, which will improve connectivity once completed. Additionally, on 16 August 2024, the Union Government approved a new 29 km ring metro project for Thane with 22 stations, expected to open in 2029 and executed by Maha Metro. These future projects will significantly enhance transport options in the city.
Bus Services
Thane Municipal Transport (TMT): The primary bus operator within the city, TMT has been running services since 1989. It covers Thane city and extends to suburbs including Mulund, Borivali, Mira Road, Nala Sopara, Vasai, Bhiwandi, and Navi Mumbai. Other municipal operators: Several other regional transport corporations also serve Thane. Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) operates buses from Thane Cidco Bus Stand to various areas of Navi Mumbai and beyond. Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Transport (MBMT) and Vasai-Virar Municipal Transport (VVMT) also run services through Thane. Additionally, some routes are served by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) buses.
Long-distance buses: Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses connect Thane to various parts of Maharashtra, and most private buses from across the country stop in Thane.
Auto-Rickshaws
Auto-rickshaws are the most common way to get around Thane city. They operate on a meter system, though the actual fare is scaled up by a factor that changes with periodic rate adjustments. Always check the tariff card (which should be stamped and signed by the Regional Transport Office) for the correct fare.
In practice, meters are often tampered with, so it's better to know the approximate distance to your destination and negotiate a lump-sum fare beforehand. This avoids disputes and ensures fair pricing.
Important note: Auto-rickshaws from Mumbai cannot enter Thane city limits. If you're using one from Mumbai, you must switch to a Thane-registered auto-rickshaw at the toll gate.
Taxis
If you're on a day trip from Mumbai, you can hire a taxi in Mumbai to use throughout your time in Thane. However, you cannot flag down taxis in Thane city—they must be hired in advance. Mumbai taxis are permitted to operate in Thane.
Walkability and Local Roads
Walking is viable for short distances within Thane. Important roads for navigating the city include Ram Maruti Road, Gokhale Road, LBS Marg, and Ghodbunder Road. Ghodbunder Road is particularly useful as it connects the eastern and western parts of the city and joins the Eastern Express Highway.
Future Transport Development
A light rail network covering 42 km has been proposed in three phases. The first phase would include a 16.05 km line with 11 stations, connecting Balkum and Kolshet via Naupada, which would further enhance local connectivity once completed.
