Getting Around Kolhapur

Kolhapur is a busy, largely unplanned city where two-wheelers vastly outnumber cars, and the central areas can get very congested at peak hours. Ongoing road construction adds to the jams, so a useful local tip is to use the newly built, wider roads where possible to avoid the worst of the traffic.

Rail, Metro and Tram

Kolhapur has no metro and no tram system, so these are not options for getting around the city. Rail is relevant mainly for arriving and leaving: the city sits on the Pune–Miraj–Kolhapur section of the Central Railway, and its station is named after Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj (Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Terminus). It is well connected to major Indian cities, with daily services to Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Tirupati, and weekly trains to Delhi, Ahmedabad and Dhanbad. Express services such as the Mahalakshmi, Koyna and Sahyadri link Mumbai and Kolhapur daily. Miraj is the nearest major railway station and is also well connected across India.

Buses and Public Transport

Public transport within the city is bus-based, operated by Kolhapur Municipal Transport (KMT). City buses cover most areas inside the city limits plus some suburban routes, running from the Central Bus Stand (CBS) and local depots. Services generally operate from around early morning until roughly 9–10 PM, with frequency varying by route and higher at peak hours. Fares are inexpensive and distance-based, paid in cash to the conductor, so it helps to carry small notes. Note that buses are generally not wheelchair accessible, with high steps and crowded interiors.

For travel beyond the city, the MSRTC (Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation) runs frequent buses from Pune to Kolhapur and back, with both A/C and non-A/C options, and hourly non-A/C buses from Mumbai. Private operators run similar A/C and non-A/C services. From the south, there are direct buses (private and state-owned) from many places in Karnataka, including Bangalore, Belgaon, Mangalore and Hubali. From Pune, private and state buses and shared taxis all start from Swar-Gate, a large transport hub to the south of the city.

Taxis, Auto-Rickshaws and Ride-Hailing

Auto-rickshaws are the most common form of local transport and the popular public option; licensed taxis are less common. Taxis are supposed to be metered, but negotiation is common when meters "don't work," and auto-rickshaw fares are usually agreed before the ride and paid in cash. Ride-hailing is available: Ola is widely used for cabs and autos with transparent pricing, while Uber is available but more limited to the main city areas. Prepaid taxi counters exist at the airport and the railway station, and using them for a fixed fare upfront is recommended on arrival.

For safety, it is sensible to note the auto-rickshaw's vehicle number, avoid hailing transport in isolated or poorly lit areas at night, and share trip details with a contact.

Car, Scooter and Bicycle Rental

There are several car rental agencies in Kolhapur, typically charging around ₹2,400 a day for a mid-size car, with extra charges for distances above 250 km. Self-drive car rental exists but is not widespread and requires an International Driving Permit, your home-country licence, passport and a credit card deposit. A car with a driver is more common and is recommended for tourists. Motorcycles and scooters can be rented from local shops with a valid driving licence (IDP or Indian motorcycle licence) and passport; helmets are legally required and are usually provided. Bicycle rentals are limited, though some hotels and guesthouses offer them.

If you drive yourself, remember traffic drives on the left, seatbelts are mandatory in the front seats, and helmets are mandatory for two-wheelers. Main highways such as NH48 are generally well-maintained, but smaller and city roads have potholes and unmarked speed breakers, and traffic mixes pedestrians, animals and many kinds of vehicles. Parking is available in some official areas (sometimes for a fee), but on-street parking is difficult in crowded market areas and near popular attractions.

Walking and Cycling

The city centre is highly walkable, with shops, restaurants, services, temples and markets concentrated and reachable on foot. Many old-city attractions sit close together and suit self-guided walks, and some local guides offer heritage or culinary walking tours. Particularly pedestrian-friendly spots include the area around the Mahalakshmi Temple, the Rankala Lake promenade, and certain markets such as the Kolhapuri chappal area. The main challenges are hot summers and monsoon rains. Footpaths can be uneven, narrow or absent, and pedestrians are not always given right of way.

Cycling infrastructure is limited: existing cycle tracks face encroachment, dedicated bike lanes are lacking, and traffic conditions make cycling difficult. There is a local cycling community, but cycling is more viable for leisure than for daily commuting or errands. For longer stays, car-free living is feasible if your accommodation is near amenities.

Other Transport

Private tour buses offer package tours to local attractions, but there are no hop-on-hop-off bus services. The only water transport is recreational boating at Rankala Lake — there are no commuter boat taxis — and there are no cable cars or funiculars. Accessibility infrastructure is very limited: public transport is not wheelchair accessible and many historical sites lack ramps or lifts, so pre-arranged private accessible transport, such as a car with a driver, is recommended.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Kolhapur Airport (Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj Airport, IATA: KLH) offers direct flights to Mumbai, Hyderabad, Tirupati, Ahmedabad and Bengaluru through IndiGo and StarAir, with more flights expected following a new terminal and apron expansion. On arrival, prepaid taxi counters at the airport let you arrange a fixed fare upfront, which is the recommended option. Ride-hailing through Ola is also widely used in the city, though Uber is more limited to the main city areas.
