Getting Around Bhiwandi: An Overview
Bhiwandi is a commercial and industrial city in the Thane district of Maharashtra, part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, and it sits close to both Mumbai and Thane. That location shapes how visitors move around: the city is tied into the wider Mumbai-area transport web, but its own local network is built mainly around buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis and app-based rides rather than a dense urban rail system. There is no tram service in Bhiwandi, and no metro line currently serves the city directly. The practical approach for most visitors is to combine rail or road into Bhiwandi with local buses, autos or cabs for the last stretch.
Rail Connections
Bhiwandi's primary rail hub is Bhiwandi Road Railway Station, which sits on the Vasai–Diva corridor linking the Western and Central lines of the Mumbai suburban railway network. The city also has a central railway station at Anjur Phata, connected to Central Railway at Kopar and Western Railway at Vasai. In practice, this means Bhiwandi is reachable by suburban rail from Mumbai, Thane and Kalyan, though the station is generally not right on top of most local destinations. Visitors commonly pair the train with a bus, auto-rickshaw or taxi for the onward short trip into town. Train plus bus or taxi is often the best balance of cost and convenience when arriving from Mumbai, Thane or Kalyan.
Metro and Tram
There is no direct metro service to Bhiwandi today. The nearest operational Mumbai Metro lines run toward Thane or Ghatkopar, so the metro is not a practical way to reach the city itself. A Bhiwandi metro project under the Mumbai Metro network is planned and under construction, intended to link Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan, but it is not yet operational. There is also no tram service in Bhiwandi. For now, plan on rail, road and bus connections rather than metro or tram.
Buses and Public Transport
Buses are the backbone of local public transport in Bhiwandi and the cheapest way to get around. The Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation runs local city buses, while Thane Municipal Transport and Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport connect Bhiwandi to Thane, Kalyan, Navi Mumbai and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Local routes serve places such as Dhamankar Naka, Temghar, Konark Arcade, Shanti Nagar and the APMC market, and they link the town with nearby residential and industrial zones.
The main hub is Bhiwandi Bus Stand, alongside various local stops. Fares are paid in cash on board and are distance-based and inexpensive. Buses generally run from roughly early morning until around 11:00 PM to midnight, with frequency varying widely between routes. A few practical points:
- Buses are the cheapest option for intra-town travel and for reaching Thane, Kalyan and Navi Mumbai.
- Services get very crowded during morning and evening peak hours, so travel outside those windows if you can.
- Buses generally have stairs and are not easily accessible for travellers with mobility challenges; specialised transport has to be arranged separately.
- Public transport is limited at night and outside bus and train hours, so plan on a taxi or ride-share for late trips.
Taxis, Auto-Rickshaws and Ride-Hailing
For direct trips, luggage, and early or late travel when public transport is thin, taxis and app-based rides are the most convenient option. Mumbai's black-and-yellow metered taxis operate to and from Bhiwandi and can be hailed on the street or picked up at taxi stands, and private local tour operators also offer taxis for hire.
Auto-rickshaws are widely used for short hops. Fares are typically cash-based, with a minimum charge and a per-kilometre rate on top; if the meter is not being used, agree on the fare before you set off. App-based services such as Ola and Uber are available for both autos and cars, with dynamic in-app pricing, GPS tracking and driver verification, and payment either in cash or through the app (which usually requires an Indian payment setup). Many visitors find app-based cabs the safer choice precisely because of that tracking and verification.
Driving and Rentals
Self-driving is possible but demanding. Cars can be rented through international companies operating out of Mumbai or through local rental firms, and rentals typically require an international driving permit, your home licence, a passport and a credit card. Because traffic is heavy and driving is chaotic, a hired car with a driver is often the preferred choice. Motorcycle and scooter rentals are limited in Bhiwandi itself and are more easily arranged from agencies in Thane or Mumbai with a valid motorcycle licence; bicycle sharing and rentals are not widely available.
If you do drive, note that traffic keeps to the left, seatbelts are mandatory, and helmets are required on two-wheelers. Main roads are generally decent while side roads vary, and congestion is heavy. Parking is difficult in crowded areas, though some commercial complexes have designated parking.
Walking and Cycling
Walking and cycling are challenging in Bhiwandi because of its metropolitan and industrial character. There are no dedicated bicycle lanes, and cycling on main roads is hazardous. Pedestrian-friendly areas are limited, though local markets are walkable, and there are no organised walking tours in the city. Industrial zones, major highways and congested thoroughfares are best avoided on foot or by bike. There are also no tour buses, hop-on-hop-off services, boat taxis, cable cars or funiculars in Bhiwandi, though custom tours can be arranged from Mumbai or Thane.
Getting from the Airport into Bhiwandi
Bhiwandi has no airport of its own, so visitors arrive via Mumbai's airport and continue overland. The most straightforward options are a taxi or an app-based ride-share such as Ola or Uber, which is the fastest choice for direct travel, for those with luggage, and for early or late arrivals when public transport is limited. A hired car with a driver can also be arranged through rental companies in Mumbai.
For a cheaper journey, combine rail and road: take the suburban rail network toward the Bhiwandi area and then finish the trip with a local bus, auto-rickshaw or taxi. Because roads into and around Bhiwandi are congested by industrial traffic, allow extra time and, where possible, plan daytime or early-morning travel.
Practical Tips
- Carry cash for buses and auto-rickshaws; app-based rides can be paid in cash or in-app.
- Avoid morning and evening peak hours, when buses are extremely crowded.
- Public transport thins out at night and outside bus and train hours, so keep a taxi or ride-share option in mind.
- Monsoon conditions can cause travel delays, and summer heat brings a risk of heat-related illness.
- Public transport is not designed for accessibility, so travellers with mobility challenges should arrange specialised transport in advance.
