Getting Around Barshi
Barshi is a town in the Barshi Taluka of Solapur district, Maharashtra, and one of the larger towns in the district. It functions as a business, industry, and tourism hub, and as a commercial and railway junction town on the Marathwada–Solapur corridor. For a visitor, this means the town is well connected to the wider region by road and rail, while getting around within Barshi itself is a largely straightforward, on-foot and short-hop affair.
Orientation and Walkability
Barshi is a compact municipal town, and much of what a visitor is likely to want — markets, temples, and the main commercial streets — sits within a walkable core. The municipality maintains the town's road network, and the town has historically been a transit point rather than a sprawling metropolis, so walking between nearby points is a practical option for short trips.
Do keep in mind that the town's drainage is not underground; there are open and covered gutters, so watch your footing along the edges of streets, especially after rain. Walking is best treated as your default for short distances during daylight hours, with a rickshaw or bus for anything farther out.
Rail
Barshi is described as a railway junction town, and it has a rail heritage: the historic Barshi Light Railway was a narrow-gauge line that connected remote villages before road improvements took over much of that role. Today the railway remains one of the main ways visitors reach Barshi and link it to the wider region. If you are arriving by train, the station is your natural entry point into town, and onward local transport — rickshaws and buses — can be arranged from there.
Note that Barshi does not have a metro or tram network; these simply do not exist here. Rail in Barshi means the conventional railway junction, not an urban transit system.
Buses and Public Transport
The bus stand is the workhorse of public transport in Barshi. It is an MSRTC depot, part of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation network that operates buses across the state. Barshi's bus stand connects the town to Solapur, Latur, Osmanabad (Dharashiv), Pune, and the surrounding areas, and through-buses running between Solapur, Latur, and Osmanabad frequently halt at Barshi. Services to Solapur and Latur in particular run frequently, making the bus a reliable choice for regional travel.
Beyond those main routes, the depot also runs services to a wide spread of towns and cities across the region, including Dharashiv, Beed, Ambajogai, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad), Baramati, and others, with some long-distance services reaching as far as Mumbai's suburbs and Kolhapur. Departure times vary by destination and by day, so treat any timetable as a guide rather than a guarantee.
- Buying tickets: Walk-in tickets for ordinary buses are available at the depot counter. Reserved tickets can be booked online through the MSRTC website or the MSRTC mobile app.
- Confirming times: Because schedules shift, confirm departure times with the Barshi depot counter or the official MSRTC website before you plan your day around a specific bus.
- Help line: MSRTC operates a toll-free helpline (1800 22 1250) during office hours.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Barshi is a town rather than a large city, so the practical local options are the ones you would expect in a Maharashtra town of its size: auto-rickshaws and local taxis, typically arranged on the spot or through your hotel rather than through a large app-based fleet. For short trips within town, an auto-rickshaw is the simplest way to cover ground quickly, particularly if you are carrying luggage or visiting a temple or market outside easy walking range.
For longer journeys — to a nearby town, a railway station, or the bus stand with heavy bags — agree on the fare before you set off. If you are arriving by train or bus, transport is generally available at the station and bus stand to take you onward into town.
Getting from the Airport
Barshi does not have its own commercial airport, so visitors flying in typically arrive via a larger regional or metropolitan airport and continue overland. The practical route is by road or rail from that gateway city:
- By bus: MSRTC services connect Barshi to major regional centres, and through-buses on the Solapur–Latur–Osmanabad corridor halt at Barshi. If you land near one of these cities, a bus is a straightforward and economical way to reach town.
- By train: Barshi's railway junction links it to the wider rail network, so a train from a major city to Barshi is a comfortable option if the timings suit you.
- By taxi or hired car: For a direct, door-to-door transfer from an airport to Barshi, a hired taxi or car is the most convenient choice, especially with luggage or if you are arriving late.
Whichever you choose, plan your onward leg in advance: confirm bus or train timings before you fly, and if you opt for a taxi, arrange it ahead rather than relying on finding one at short notice.
Practical Tips
- Use the bus stand as your hub for regional travel, and the railway junction for longer rail connections.
- For local errands and sightseeing, walk where you can and take an auto-rickshaw for the rest.
- Buy ordinary bus tickets at the depot counter; book reserved seats online or via the MSRTC app.
- Always reconfirm bus departure times — published timetables are reference-only.
- Watch your step around open and covered gutters, particularly in wet weather.
