Getting Around Ponnani
Ponnani is a compact port town at the mouth of the Bharathappuzha, on Kerala's Malabar Coast. It sits on National Highway 66 and is also linked by the Palakkad–Ponnani State Highway, so road transport is the backbone of how visitors move around. The town is bisected by the old Cannoly Canal, which is worth keeping in mind when you're working out which side of town you need to be on.
Buses and Public Transport
Buses are the main way to get in and out of Ponnani, and the KSRTC Bus Stand is the hub for state-run services. From here you can reach Kozhikode, Guruvayur, Thrissur, Palakkad, Tirur, Malappuram, Kuttippuram, Kottakkal, Kodungallur and Ernakulam, with services also running to nearby pilgrimage and beach spots such as Guruvayur Temple, Ponnani Beach and the Bharathapuzha riverbanks.
- KSRTC operates several classes of bus from Ponnani: Ordinary, Limited Stop, Fast Passenger and Superfast. If you're heading further afield, a Fast Passenger or Superfast service will cut your journey time.
- Services include both short-distance and inter-district routes, so you can use the same stand for a quick hop to a neighbouring town or a longer run down the coast.
- Bus operations run around the clock according to their schedules, though the bus stand office itself is open only 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, Monday to Saturday. Buy your ticket on board from the conductor.
- Local buses are cheap: expect roughly ₹7 for about three kilometres. Fares are paid in cash to the conductor, so keep small notes handy.
Autorickshaws
Autorickshaws are the most convenient option for short trips within town, especially if you're carrying luggage or the bus doesn't go quite where you need. They charge in the region of ₹15 per kilometre. Agree on the fare or confirm the meter before you set off.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Air-conditioned taxis can be hired for around ₹1,000 per day, which is a reasonable choice if you plan to visit several places around Ponnani or want a car at your disposal for beach and river trips. For longer point-to-point journeys, ask at your hotel or the bus stand about arranging a car.
Boats
Because Ponnani sits at a river estuary, boats are part of local transport as well as a pleasant way to see the water. The Jhankar boat service to Padincharekkara runs from 7 AM to 7 PM. The vessel is large enough to carry around 50 passengers and 12 cars, so it's a practical crossing as well as a scenic one.
Walking
Ponnani is a densely built town, and much of the centre — the area around the canal, the mosques and the market streets — is manageable on foot. Walking is a good way to take in the town's character, including its many mosques, but be prepared for heat and humidity, and use autorickshaws for longer legs or when heading out to the beaches.
Rail
Ponnani itself has no railway station. The nearest station is at Tirur, which is also served by buses from Ponnani, so the usual approach is to take a train to Tirur and then a bus or taxi onward into town. There is no metro or tram network in Ponnani.
Getting There from the Airport
The nearest airport is at Kondotty. From there, the practical route into Ponnani is by road — a taxi for a direct transfer, or a combination of bus services via the towns connected to the KSRTC Bus Stand. If you're arriving by train instead, head for Tirur and continue by bus or taxi.
Practical Tips
- Carry cash in small denominations for bus and autorickshaw fares.
- Use the KSRTC Bus Stand as your reference point for onward connections to Kozhikode, Thrissur, Palakkad, Ernakulam and the surrounding towns.
- If you want to cover several sights in a day, a hired a/c taxi at around ₹1,000 per day can work out simpler than piecing together buses and autorickshaws.
- Remember the canal divides the town — check which side your destination is on before you set out.
