Getting Around Kochi: A Practical Guide
Kochi is a major port city in Kerala and well-connected by multiple transport modes. As a visitor, you'll have several options for moving around the city, though traffic congestion is a persistent challenge. The city has invested in modern transport infrastructure, including rapid transit systems, to improve mobility.
Metro and Rapid Transit
Kochi Metro, the city's rapid transit system, was inaugurated in 2017 and provides a modern way to travel across the city. The metro connects to the Vytilla Mobility Hub, a major integrated transport terminus that serves as a central point for various modes of public transportation.
In a first for India, Kochi also operates a Water Metro system, which was inaugurated in April 2023. This makes Kochi unique as the only city in the country to have both a metro rail system and a water metro system. The Water Metro provides an integrated water transport option and complements the rail network.
Buses and Public Transport
Buses are the backbone of public transport in Kochi and run throughout the day. The city has two main types of bus services:
- Private buses: Red buses operated by private companies dominate the city's bus network and offer frequent, no-frills service on the major routes. These are punctual and reliable but have been criticized for aggressive driving.
- KSRTC buses: The state's public transport company operates city services in blue-white livery. KSRTC offers Thiru-Kochi basic services with the same fares as private buses, as well as premium air-conditioned Volvo bus services on selected routes.
Most buses run on major routes connecting the city and suburbs. Rather than a numbered routing system, buses display destination boards with important stops marked. The most popular route is the Aluva–Fort Kochi Route, which covers almost all city areas.
Major bus stations include Kaloor Bus Station for private long-distance buses, KSRTC Central Bus Station in the south for inter-state services, KSRTC Jetty Station near Central Boat Jetty for city services, and Fort Kochi Bus Terminus. The Vytilla Mobility Hub is an integrated terminus where metro rail and boat services also connect.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis can be hired from taxi stands located throughout the city. Traditional on-street taxis are not common, but ride-hailing apps like Uber and Ola Cabs operate in Kochi for both taxis and auto rickshaws.
Auto rickshaws are widely available and can be hailed on the street. Both CNG (green and yellow/black) and electric (white and blue) auto rickshaws are increasingly common in the city.
Walkability and Local Transport
The city's walkability varies by area. Fort Kochi has narrow roads due to heritage properties and dense population, making it a pedestrian-friendly area for exploration. However, traffic congestion in other parts of the city can make walking less convenient.
Two-wheeler vehicles like motorcycles, scooters, and bicycles are extremely popular among locals, though these are primarily for residents rather than visitor options.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Cochin International Airport is located about 29 km from the city centre and is the largest airport in Kerala. Several transport options connect the airport to the city:
- Bus: KSRTC operates multiple bus services from the airport. The Orange Bus (Low Floor Bus) is an air-conditioned Volvo service that departs every 30–40 minutes and travels via Aluva, Kalamassery, and Vytilla, terminating at Fort Cochin. The journey takes approximately 1 hour 40 minutes and costs ₹70.
- Pre-paid taxi: The Cochin Airport Taxi Society (CATS) operates pre-paid taxi services from a dedicated counter in the arrivals hall. Only CATS taxis are permitted to pick up passengers at the airport. The standard charge for airport-to-city transfers is ₹510 for non-air-conditioned taxis or ₹650 for air-conditioned taxis, with an additional 15–25% surcharge between 7 PM and 6 AM.
- Car rental: Several car rental companies operate counters in both terminals. Many hotels and travel agents also provide free pick-up and drop-off services.
- Train: The nearest railway stations are Aluva and Angamaly, about 15 km away, where most major trains stop.
- Auto rickshaw: While autos are not permitted inside the airport to protect CATS taxi interests, they are readily available outside the airport premises and are the most budget-friendly option. Auto rides from the airport to nearby railway stations at Aluva or Angamaly typically cost less than ₹50, though you should be prepared to negotiate the fare.
Railway Connections
Kochi has two major railway terminals within the city. Ernakulam Junction (Ernakulam South) handles most long-distance trains from across India, while Ernakulam Town (Ernakulam North) serves intercity trains and some long-distance services. Outside Ernakulam Junction, a pre-paid auto rickshaw service allows you to take a receipt and travel to other parts of the city without negotiating fares.
Road Network
Kochi is served by multiple national and state highways connecting it to other parts of Kerala and India. However, traffic congestion remains a significant challenge, particularly at major junctions. The city's road infrastructure has not kept pace with traffic demand, so plan extra time for journeys during peak hours.
