Getting Around Kanhangad

Kanhangad is a coastal city in Kasaragod district, Kerala, and the most populous city in the district. For a visitor, it is a compact, largely walkable town centre with a straightforward set of transport options: autorickshaws and local buses for short hops, trains for longer journeys along the coast, and taxis or app-based cabs for comfort. The town sits roughly midway between Mangalore and Kannur, which makes it easy to reach from either direction.

How Tourists Move Around the City

Most day-to-day movement in Kanhangad happens on foot, by autorickshaw, or by local bus. The town centre is fairly level and plain, so short trips between the bus station, the market area, and nearby landmarks are practical on foot. Autorickshaws are the default choice for slightly longer or quicker trips, and buses cover the main roads at low cost.

Be aware that traffic in the core can be heavy. Expect extreme congestion between 7 AM and 9 PM around the bus station area, particularly along the stretch from Kottacherry circle to Old Government Hospital Circle. If your plans involve that part of town, allow extra time or travel outside the busiest hours.

Rail Network

Kanhangad has its own railway station, Kanhangad railway station (station code KZE). It sits on the coastal rail route, which means trains are a convenient way to arrive from or continue on to neighbouring towns and cities. For a visitor, the railway station is the main anchor for longer-distance travel, and it is also a useful reference point when orienting yourself in town.

There is no metro or tram network in Kanhangad; rail is the only rail-based option, and the town's public transport otherwise relies on road services.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Buses are the workhorse of local and regional travel. Services connect Kanhangad with Kasaragod, Mangalore, and Kannur, so you can use them both for getting into town and for day trips along the coast. Fares are inexpensive: a bus journey of about 3 km costs only ₹7, making buses the cheapest way to cover short distances.

For travel within the city, local buses run along the main routes and are a good option if you are comfortable with a slightly slower pace and want to keep costs down. Tickets are bought on board from the conductor.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Autorickshaws are the most common on-demand transport for visitors. They charge around ₹21 per km, so agree on the fare or confirm the meter before you set off, especially for trips where you are unsure of the distance. For longer journeys, or if you prefer a car, taxis are available; ride-hailing apps may also work in the area, though availability can vary, so it is wise to have a backup plan such as a local taxi or an autorickshaw.

Walkability

Walking is a realistic way to explore the central part of Kanhangad, which is largely plain and easy to navigate on foot. The main caveat is traffic: the bus station area and the Kottacherry-to-Old-Government-Hospital stretch get very congested during the day and evening, so pedestrians should stay alert and use caution near busy junctions. Outside those congested pockets, walking between nearby shops, eateries, and landmarks is convenient.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Kanhangad does not have its own airport. The nearest airport is Mangalore (IXE), in Karnataka, about 75 km away. Kannur airport is further, at roughly 100 km. From either airport, you will need to continue by road or rail:

Because buses run between Kanhangad and both Mangalore and Kannur, a common approach is to take a bus from the airport city to Kanhangad, or to take a train to Kanhangad railway station and then a short autorickshaw ride to your accommodation. If you are arriving late or with heavy luggage, arranging a taxi for the full journey is the simplest option.
