Getting Around Alappuzha
Alappuzha (also called Alleppey) is a city on the Laccadive Sea in Kerala, built around a network of canals that form part of National Waterway 3. That watery geography shapes how you move here: boats are not just a tourist novelty but a genuine way to reach places that roads cannot. For most visitors, getting around means a mix of local buses, auto rickshaws, taxis, and ferries, with walking best kept to the compact city centre.
Arriving by Train
Alappuzha has its own railway station, and train service connects the city with destinations across Kerala and beyond. Within the state, you can reach Alappuzha by train from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode. Longer-distance services link the city with major Indian cities including Chennai, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Mumbai, New Delhi, Mangalore, and Kolkata. If you are coming from Hyderabad, the Sabari Express is an option.
The railway station is a short distance from the city centre, and prepaid auto services are available there, along with reservation counters and waiting rooms. There is no metro or tram network in Alappuzha; the train is the only rail-based transport.
Buses and Public Transport
Alappuzha has a cheap and efficient local bus system, as is typical in Kerala. You can catch buses to almost everywhere from the KSRTC bus stand. There are two main bus terminals: the KSRTC bus stand and a separate private bus stand. KSRTC buses operate from the depot near the boat jetty, and private buses serve nearby towns and cities as well. Tickets can be bought at the bus station or online.
One practical quirk to plan around: there are no buses from the KSRTC bus station directly to the beach area around Vijay Park, so you will need an auto rickshaw for that leg. Buses also connect Alappuzha with other cities, including Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Chennai, Bangalore, Mysore, and Coimbatore.
Autorickshaws
Auto rickshaws are a cheap and widely available way to move between attractions. You can hail one on the street or book by phone, and there is a prepaid auto service at the railway station. Always agree on a price before you set out. You can bargain, or check with the tourist centre nearby to confirm the going auto charges in the area before you start your trip.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Local taxis are available and are inexpensive by Western standards. Car rental companies offer both chauffeur-driven and self-drive options, with rates rising depending on the extras you choose, such as whether you want a driver or air-conditioning. If you are unfamiliar with the area or with driving on Indian roads, hiring a driver is the sensible choice, and a good driver can also recommend places to eat and visit. Prepaid taxis are available at Alappuzha Railway Station and the KSRTC Bus Stand, and you can also book through apps and local operators.
Tourist taxis are the most convenient way to travel from one attraction to another, especially if you are travelling as a group. They can be found at most airports and railway stations.
Boats and Ferries
A visit to Alappuzha would not be complete without a journey by boat. For some destinations, such as Kuttanad, boats are the preferred method of transport because the locations are inaccessible by road.
The government-run Kerala State Water Transport Department (SWTD) operates ferries that are widely used by locals and are a scenic, inexpensive way to get around. The SWTD boat jetty sits opposite the Alappuzha KSRTC bus stand. You can use the service and alight at any preferred stop. A tourist boat service to Kollam district is also available from the Alappuzha boat jetty at a reasonable price. One popular route runs between Alappuzha and Kottayam, with multiple short stops along the way; the boat's motor is loud, so consider bringing earplugs. From Kottayam you can return by boat or by KSRTC bus, either direct or with a transfer in Changanassery.
Water taxis are also available at Alappuzha Boat Jetty, offering on-demand boat rides around Vembanad Lake. They can seat around ten people, and advance booking is recommended. Houseboats are available for day and overnight cruises if you want a longer time on the water.
Walking
From the city centre you can walk to the nearby boat jetties. Most other sights lie in the outskirts of town, where walking is too far. Note that between the city centre and the beach there are no paved sidewalks, and in parts you will be walking at the edge of the roadway.
Getting There from the Airport
Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport to Alappuzha. From there you can take a taxi to Kochi and then continue by bus or train to Alappuzha. Another option is to take a local bus from nearby Athani, which is reachable by rickshaw.
Alternative airports are in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kozhikode (Calicut), Chennai, and Bangalore, from which you can catch a train to Alappuzha.
By Car
The entire Alappuzha district is well connected by NH 66 (formerly NH 47), which passes through the Alappuzha, Ambalapuzha, and Cherthala towns. The city is also linked by road to Kochi, Kottayam, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Chennai, Bangalore, and Coimbatore. State Highway 66 connects Alappuzha to Thoppumpady, passing through Mararikulam and Arthunkal, and an elevated beach highway bypasses the city centre to ease congestion.
