Getting Around Thanesar

Thanesar is a historic city and Hindu pilgrimage centre in the Kurukshetra district of Haryana, and its built-up area merges with that of Kurukshetra. For the visitor, this is good news: the practical travel hub for the area is Kurukshetra, and the guidance below treats the two as one destination for transport purposes.

How Tourists Move Around the City

Within the city itself, the auto-rickshaw is the mainstay of local transport. Shared three-wheeler auto-rickshaws are the only available option for moving around the city, so plan on flagging one down or joining a shared run rather than looking for a formal city bus network or metro inside Thanesar.

Rail Network

Kurukshetra is a junction on the main Amritsar–New Delhi rail line, which makes the train the most convenient way to arrive from Delhi or from further north in Punjab. Trains to Kurukshetra can be taken from New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi railway station, and Nizamuddin, with the journey from New Delhi taking roughly two and a half hours. Kurukshetra Junction railway station is the arrival point for the area.

Metro and Trams

There is no metro or tram network serving Thanesar or Kurukshetra. The nearest metro system is in Delhi, which is useful only as the starting point of your journey rather than as local transport once you arrive.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Long-distance buses connect Kurukshetra with Delhi and Chandigarh, and are a practical alternative when trains are full or inconveniently timed.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

The source material for this area does not describe a local taxi or ride-hailing market. Treat the shared auto-rickshaw as your default, and if you want a private vehicle, arrange it through your hotel or negotiate directly with a driver rather than assuming an app-based service will be available.

Walkability

Thanesar's core sights are tied to its historic mound and temple areas, and the city's heritage is concentrated enough that some walking is rewarding. Note that the Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple is the central and most important place in the 48 kos parikrama of Kurukshetra, and the Bhishma Kund water tank lies about 1.5 km from Thanesar on the Kurukshetra–Pehowa road — a stretch most visitors will want to cover by auto-rickshaw rather than on foot. In general, use walking for the immediate temple and market surroundings and switch to a three-wheeler for anything further out.

Getting There from the Airport

Thanesar and Kurukshetra have no airport of their own, so the practical air gateway is Delhi. From Delhi, continue by train or bus:

On arrival at Kurukshetra Junction or the bus stand, complete the last leg to Thanesar by shared auto-rickshaw.
