Getting Around Panchkula: A Practical Guide
Panchkula is a planned city in Haryana and a satellite of Chandigarh, laid out on a sector system like its larger neighbour. It sits right on the border with Punjab, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh, and together with Chandigarh and Mohali it forms the Chandigarh Tricity. For a visitor, the most useful thing to understand is that Panchkula and Chandigarh function almost as one place: they share an airport and a railway station, and getting between the two is quick and cheap. Panchkula has its own bus stand, though, and that is your main hub for buses into and out of the city.
How Tourists Get Around
Panchkula has no metro or tram of its own, and no local rail network within the city. In practice, visitors move around by bus, autorickshaw, cycle rickshaw, taxi or ride-hailing cab, and on foot within individual sectors. Because the city is planned and compact, most trips are short, and many people simply catch a bus or autorickshaw from the stops and stands on the main roads that divide the sectors.
If you are basing yourself in Panchkula to see the sights, taxis are the most convenient option for reaching the city's attractions, which are spread out rather than clustered in one walkable core. For everyday short hops, autorickshaws and buses do the job well.
Rail
Panchkula does not have its own railway station. The nearest railway station is in Chandigarh, only a short distance away, and Panchkula effectively shares it. From Chandigarh railway station you can reach Panchkula by private or state-run bus, or by taxi. Panchkula also lies on the Kalka–Ambala road, which is useful if you are arriving from that direction by road.
Metro and Tram
There is no metro or tram service in Panchkula. The city is not served by any rail-based urban transit, so plan on buses, autorickshaws, taxis or walking instead.
Buses and Public Transport
Buses are the backbone of public transport here, and the system is well developed across the Tricity.
- Who runs them: Services operate under Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU), while Haryana Roadways runs a separate fleet for travel within Panchkula.
- Panchkula bus stand: Located in Sector 5, this is the city's main bus terminal. Inter-state and intra-state buses depart from here at regular intervals. From this stand you can board buses to Chandigarh and Mohali.
- Buses into Panchkula: To reach Panchkula from Chandigarh, head to the Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Sector 17, Chandigarh, where buses to Panchkula can be boarded.
- Stops within the city: Bus stops are placed at various points around the city, and they post schedules showing which buses halt there. You can catch buses within the city from the stops on all the main roads that divide the sectors.
- Longer-distance arrivals: Buses are available to Panchkula from Delhi, Chandigarh, Karnal and Ambala.
- Fares: A bus from Chandigarh to Panchkula costs roughly ₹16–₹20.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are easy to find and are the recommended way to get around if you are visiting Panchkula's attractions. There are several taxi stands in the city, including in Sector 14 and Sector 8, and numerous private operators run services from locations such as the HUDA taxi stand in Sector 14, near the shopping centre in Sector 20, near Booth Market in Sector 15C, near Housing Board Chowk, in Devi Nagar (Sector 3), and along the Ambala–Kalka road.
- How fares work: Fares are pre-decided and charged per kilometre, roughly ₹10–₹20 per km, with waiting charges and night charges billed extra.
- Chandigarh to Panchkula: A taxi for this trip costs around ₹100–₹150.
- Ride-hailing: App-based cab services are available in the city alongside the traditional taxi stands, so you can book a car to your location rather than walking to a stand.
Autorickshaws and Cycle Rickshaws
For short trips, autorickshaws and cycle rickshaws are the most practical and cheapest options.
- Autorickshaws: Readily available throughout the city and typically used for journeys within about 5–8 km. They also run on a shared basis for shorter distances at a lower cost, which is a good budget option if you are not in a hurry.
- Cycle rickshaws: Best for very short hops of roughly 1–2 km, with fares of approximately ₹20–₹50 depending on distance.
Walking
Panchkula is a planned city built on a sector system, which makes walking pleasant within a sector and along the main dividing roads. The city is compact enough that many everyday errands and short visits can be done on foot. That said, the city's attractions are not all within one walkable area, so you will usually combine walking with a bus, autorickshaw or taxi for longer legs. One of the city's canals, the Singh Nalla, has been beautified with a walking track and plantings, giving pedestrians a pleasant route to enjoy.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Panchkula shares its airport with Chandigarh, and the airport is only a short distance from the city. From Chandigarh airport, both private and state-run buses and taxis are available to take you into Panchkula. Taxis are the simplest option if you are arriving with luggage, while buses are the cheaper choice. The same applies if you arrive by train at Chandigarh railway station: buses and taxis both connect you to Panchkula.
Practical Tips
- Use the Sector 5 bus stand as your base for bus travel out of Panchkula, and ISBT Sector 17 in Chandigarh for buses into it.
- Keep small change handy for bus fares and rickshaws.
- For sightseeing across the city, book a taxi or ride-hailing cab rather than relying on buses, which are better for point-to-point commuting.
- Agree on the fare or confirm the meter before starting a taxi or autorickshaw journey, and remember that waiting and night charges are extra.
- Because Panchkula and Chandigarh are so close and share transport links, it is easy to treat them as a single base for exploring the Tricity.
