Getting Around Karnal
Karnal sits on National Highway 44 (the old Grand Trunk Road, also referred to as NH-1), almost exactly midway between New Delhi and Chandigarh. That position shapes everything about how a visitor moves here: the city is easy to reach from either direction, and once you are in town, short-distance transport is handled by road rather than by any rail-based urban system.
Arriving by Train
Karnal has its own railway station, and it is the most comfortable way to arrive if you are coming from Delhi, Ambala or Chandigarh. The station lies on the Delhi–Ambala–Kalka section of the Northern Railway, so it is served by a mix of passenger, mail/express and superfast trains rather than by any dedicated high-speed service. Trains from Delhi, Ambala or Chandigarh take roughly two to three hours depending on the class and the specific service.
For departures toward Karnal, you can board at New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi Railway Station or Hazrat Nizamuddin, so you have some flexibility about which side of the capital you start from. Buy tickets the usual Indian Railways way — online in advance, or at the station counter if you are travelling on a shorter notice.
Arriving by Bus
Buses are the other straightforward option, and they run frequently along the highway corridor. From Delhi, the natural starting point is the Inter-State Bus Terminus at Kashmere Gate. The journey normally takes two to three hours, though Delhi's city traffic can stretch that. You can equally catch a bus from Chandigarh, since the distance is comparable in both directions.
Haryana Roadways is the main state operator, with frequent services linking Karnal to the larger Haryana cities. Its Volvo AC coaches are the plusher option, with low-floor access, deluxe seating, curtains, tinted glass, mobile chargers and even FM radio on board. Private operators also run on these routes, which gives you a choice of timings and price points.
Getting Around the City
Karnal has no metro or tram network, and no suburban rail service for local hops — the railway station is for intercity travel, not for moving around town. In practice, visitors get around by road, and the options are simple.
- Auto-rickshaws are the main local means of transport. Some run on the meter, while others operate on shared or negotiated fares, so it is worth agreeing on the price before you set off.
- Cycle rickshaws cover shorter trips and are widely available.
- Private taxis and cars can be hired at negotiable prices, either for a single trip or for a few hours at a time.
- Ride-hailing apps are not documented as a local staple here; the established pattern is to flag down an auto or book a car through a local operator.
Local travel agencies also offer car and taxi rentals along with tour packages, which is a practical route if you want a vehicle and driver for a day of sightseeing rather than a series of separate fares. Several operate in the city centre and around Railway Road and the Mughal Canal Market area, so you can arrange this on arrival.
Walkability
Walking works best for short errands within a single neighbourhood or market area rather than as a way to cross the city. For anything beyond a comfortable stroll, plan on an auto-rickshaw or a hired car.
Reaching Karnal from the Airport
Karnal has no commercial airport. The local airfield, associated with the Karnal Flying Club and the Haryana Institute of Civil Aviation, is used for general aviation and pilot training, and proposals to open it to commercial traffic have not been implemented. Plan on flying into one of the two major airports that serve the region and continuing overland:
- Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi (DEL) — the usual choice if you are arriving on an international or long-haul domestic flight. From the airport you can continue to Karnal by train from one of Delhi's railway stations, by bus from Kashmere Gate, or by hired taxi or car.
- Chandigarh Airport — a good alternative if your itinerary starts in the north. Karnal is roughly the same distance from Chandigarh as it is from Delhi, and the same mix of train, bus and taxi connections applies.
Whichever airport you use, the onward leg is a road or rail journey of a few hours rather than a quick city transfer, so it is worth booking your train or arranging a car in advance rather than sorting it out on arrival.
Practical Notes
- Karnal's location on the highway means intercity buses and trains are frequent and the city is well connected in both directions — toward Delhi and Panipat to the south, and toward Kurukshetra and Kaithal to the north.
- For state bus information, the Haryana State Transport Department maintains an office in Chandigarh and a website at hartrans.gov.in.
- If you prefer a fixed price over haggling, arranging a car through a local travel agency at the start of your stay usually simplifies getting around.
