Getting Your Bearings
Mehsana (also spelled Mahesana) is the headquarters of Mehsana district in north Gujarat. One practical fact shapes almost every journey in the city: a railway line on the Ahmedabad–Palanpur route runs through the middle of town, dividing it into an older city side (Mehsana-1) and a highway-side area (Mehsana-2). The two halves are linked by two railway underpasses, Gopi Nala and Bhammaria Nala, and by a railway overbridge at Visnagar Link Road, with a further underpass approved in 2025 to connect Prajapati Vadi on T B Road with Brahmaninagar. When planning any trip across town, it helps to know which side of the tracks your destination sits on, since all road journeys between the two must use one of these crossings.
Rail
Mehsana's rail connection is long established: the city was linked by the Gaekwar's Baroda State Railway, opened in 1887, and this connection was significant enough that the state's administrative headquarters was moved to Mehsana in 1902. Today the Ahmedabad–Palanpur line still runs through the city, and the town's division into Mehsana-1 and Mehsana-2 is defined by it. For a visitor, the railway is chiefly useful for reaching Mehsana from elsewhere in Gujarat and beyond, and for understanding the layout of the city itself.
City Buses
Mehsana has a city bus service. A dedicated mobile app, "Mahesana City Bus Service," published under the Katch Mobility brand, lets passengers book city bus tickets, track buses in real time, view fare charts, and check route timetables. The app is free, available for iPhone (iOS 15.6 or later), and in English. For a visitor, this is the most practical way to plan a bus journey: check the route and timetable, see where the bus is, and buy a ticket through the app rather than relying on guesswork at the stop.
- Use the app to look up routes and timetables before setting out.
- Real-time tracking helps you avoid long waits at stops.
- Fare charts in the app let you know the cost before you board.
- Tickets can be booked in the app, so keep your phone charged and connected.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Visitors should treat this as something to arrange or confirm locally rather than something that can be planned in advance from these sources.
Walking
What it does make clear is that the railway line through the centre means walking between the two halves of the city requires using the underpasses or the overbridge, so routes on foot between Mehsana-1 and Mehsana-2 will funnel through those crossings. The city also has a network of gardens and public spaces, including Parashuram Play Ground, Maharshi Arvind Baug, and Biladi Baug (Mahatma Gandhi garden), as well as the redeveloped Para Lake (Swami Vivekanand Lake), which make pleasant walking destinations in their own right.
Getting In from the Airport
Visitors arriving by air should plan to confirm the nearest suitable airport and onward connections locally; the rail line through the city and the city bus network described above are the transport options the sources actually document for movement into and around Mehsana.
Practical Tips
- Before crossing town, check whether your destination is in Mehsana-1 (old city) or Mehsana-2 (highway area); all road crossings between them use the Gopi Nala or Bhammaria Nala underpasses or the Visnagar Link Road overbridge.
- Download the Mahesana City Bus Service app for route timetables, fare charts, live bus tracking, and ticket booking.
- Note that the app collects your name and phone number for app functionality, so have those ready when you set it up.
- Allow extra time for journeys that cross the railway line, since traffic concentrates at the limited number of crossings.
