Getting Around Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar is a planned city laid out in sectors, and it works best as a twin city of Ahmedabad: many of the most frequent transport options run through Ahmedabad rather than starting in Gandhinagar itself. For a visitor, that means the practical strategy is usually to use local transport within Gandhinagar, and to treat Ahmedabad's larger rail, air and metro hubs as your gateway for longer journeys.

Local Transport Within the City

For short hops between sectors, the most convenient option is a CNG auto-rickshaw. These are the recommended way to move around locally, and they are easy to flag down or hire for a point-to-point trip. If you prefer a bus, VTCOS runs local city buses that serve the city's sectors.

Rail

Gandhinagar has its own railway station, Gandhinagar Capital (station code GNC), located in Sector 14. Services from here are limited, but a few useful trains do run, including the Jaipur–Bandra Garib Rath, the Haridwar Mail (for Delhi and Haridwar) and the Shanti Express (for Indore).

Because Gandhinagar Capital has relatively few trains, most visitors will find it easier to use Ahmedabad Railway Station (ADI) in Kalupur, Ahmedabad, which is the nearest major rail junction and offers far more frequent connections to cities across India. Sabarmati Junction (SBI) in Ahmedabad's Sabarmati neighbourhood is closer to Gandhinagar than Kalupur, but it has fewer services. For travel toward northern and eastern India, Indian Railways services are also available from Kalol Junction (KLL).

Metro

The Ahmedabad Metro is being extended to connect Gandhinagar with Ahmedabad. Under Phase II, the metro's north–south line is being extended from Motera station to Mahatma Mandir station, with a branch line linking GNLU station to GIFT City station. Until these extensions open, the metro is not yet a way to travel between the two cities, so plan on rail, bus or road for now.

Buses and Intercity Connections

Gandhinagar has its own GSRTC bus depot (Pathik Ashram), and GSRTC buses are the main public-transport link for journeys beyond the city. As with rail, services to and from Ahmedabad tend to be more frequent, so many intercity trips are easiest to arrange via Ahmedabad.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis and auto-rickshaws are available for hire, and are the sensible choice for trips with luggage or for reaching the airport. When arriving at the airport, use the prepaid taxi or auto-rickshaw booth rather than negotiating with drivers directly, or arrange a pickup through your hotel in advance — this saves considerable hassle. Ride-hailing apps are a convenient alternative where coverage is available, and can be a good way to fix a fare before you set off.

Walkability

Gandhinagar is a planned, sector-based city with extensive green cover, which makes walking pleasant in the cooler months. However, the sectors are spread out, so walking works well for short local errands but is less practical for crossing the city or reaching the airport. Expect to combine walking with auto-rickshaws or buses for anything beyond a short distance, and take the hot summer months into account when planning on foot.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Gandhinagar is served by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) International Airport (airport code AMD), which sits in the Hansol area of Ahmedabad's North Zone. The airport handles both domestic and international flights, with non-stop international connections to destinations including Muscat, Kuwait, Dubai, Doha, Sharjah and Singapore, plus a direct service to New York/New Jersey (Newark) via Mumbai. Domestically, it is well connected to major Indian cities, and most domestic airlines operate flights in and out of Ahmedabad.

A few practical notes on the airport itself: the international terminal is not open around the clock and may not open until the late afternoon, and as at other Indian airports you will generally not be allowed in until roughly three hours before your scheduled flight. If you are connecting between a domestic and an international flight, be prepared to wait outside the terminal for some hours.

To reach Gandhinagar from the airport:

Because the airport lies in Ahmedabad, some visitors find it simpler to base themselves in Ahmedabad for the first or last night of a trip and travel on to Gandhinagar by road, rail or bus.
