Getting Around Bhuj: A Practical Guide
Bhuj is the headquarters of Kutch district in Gujarat and a common base for exploring the wider region. The city is compact enough that a mix of walking, auto-rickshaws and the local bus service will cover most visitor needs, while the railway station and airport connect it to the rest of India. Here is how to move around once you arrive.
Rail Network
Bhuj has its own railway station, and trains link the city directly to a range of destinations across India, including Mumbai, Pune, Jaipur, Puri and Kolkata, as well as Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Delhi, Ajmer, Ujjain and other cities. For a visitor, the train is the most straightforward way to arrive from elsewhere in Gujarat or from major cities further afield. Buy tickets through the usual Indian Railways channels — online booking or at the station counter — and confirm your train's days of operation in advance, since not every service runs daily.
Bhuj has no metro or tram system. Rail travel here means the mainline railway station, not an urban transit network, so you will not be using trains to move around within the city itself.
Buses and Public Transport
The city has a city bus service, which operates from the GSRTC Bus Port. This is the main public transport option for getting around Bhuj itself, and it is a cheap way to cover longer stretches of the city.
For travel beyond Bhuj, the GSRTC Bus Port is the hub. State transport buses connect the city to destinations all over Gujarat, and numerous private tour operators also run frequent buses to major cities both within and outside the state. If you are heading out to nearby villages or to other parts of Kutch, the bus port is where you will find your service. Tickets are generally bought at the bus port or on board, depending on the operator.
Taxis, Auto-Rickshaws and Ride-Hailing
Auto-rickshaws (tuk-tuks) are the main way visitors get around Bhuj on demand. The important practical point is that bargaining is expected: drivers will often quote a high fare if they sense you are a first-time visitor, so agree on the price before you set off. Guides with vehicles are also available if you want a driver for a longer outing or a day of sightseeing.
The source material does not describe app-based ride-hailing services operating in Bhuj, so plan on arranging transport directly — by flagging an auto-rickshaw, hiring a vehicle with a guide, or asking your accommodation to help arrange a driver.
Walking and Cycling
Walking is a realistic option for getting around parts of central Bhuj, and it is the best way to see the old city's surviving fort walls and gates, the lakes and the markets at a relaxed pace. Be aware that Bhuj has a hot, arid climate: temperatures are very warm to sweltering for most of the year, with frequent 40°C days in the hot season from mid-March to mid-June, and high humidity during the monsoon. Only the winter months from December to February bring cool mornings. Plan walks for the early morning or evening and carry water.
If you have time to spare, you can also hire a bicycle and roam around the city — a pleasant way to cover more ground than on foot while still moving at your own pace.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Bhuj has a domestic airport with daily flights connecting to Mumbai, operated by Air India. On arrival, the practical options for reaching the city are the same as those for local travel: auto-rickshaws and hired vehicles with drivers. As with any auto-rickshaw journey in Bhuj, agree on the fare before departing. If you would rather not negotiate on arrival, arrange a pickup through your hotel in advance.
For reference, Kandla Airport and Mundra Airport are also in the region, but they are some distance from Bhuj and are not the convenient arrival point for the city — Bhuj's own airport is the one to use.
Quick Tips
- Bargain before you ride: auto-rickshaw drivers commonly quote high to first-timers, so settle the price first.
- Use the GSRTC Bus Port for both the city bus service and state transport buses to the rest of Gujarat.
- Book train tickets in advance and check which days your train runs.
- Walk in the cooler hours — the climate is hot and arid for most of the year.
- Consider hiring a bicycle if you have time and want to explore at your own pace.
- Ask your hotel to arrange airport pickup if you prefer to avoid negotiating on arrival.
