Getting Around Bhavnagar
Bhavnagar is a coastal city in Gujarat's Saurashtra region, and its local transport is best described as practical rather than polished. There is no metro and no tram system here, so visitors rely on a mix of auto-rickshaws, city buses, app-based cabs and their own two feet. Hiring a taxi or cab is generally the most convenient way to get around, while rickshaws, bicycles, motorcycles and private autos cover the rest of the city and nearby villages.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Bhavnagar has no metro or tram network. Rail travel here is about reaching the city and leaving it, not moving within it. Bhavnagar Terminus (station code BVC) is the main railway station and the city's rail hub, with regular express and passenger trains connecting it to Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Delhi, as well as other cities in Saurashtra. If you arrive by train, you will still need a rickshaw, cab or bus for the final leg to your accommodation.
Buses and Public Transport
City buses are the cheapest way to move around Bhavnagar. They are operated by the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), with Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) running some city routes as well. Routes connect major areas including Victoria Park, Ghogha Beach and the main markets.
- Tickets: Fares are low and ticketed, paid in cash to the conductor. Local buses do not accept cards or digital payment, so keep small change handy.
- Hours: Buses generally run from early morning until around 9:00–10:00 PM, with more frequent service on main routes.
- Route information: Signs at bus stops are mostly in Gujarati, so asking locals or the conductor is common practice.
- Accessibility: Buses have high steps and little wheelchair space, and crowding is normal.
The main bus stand is in the Panwadi area. For travel beyond the city, GSRTC runs intercity services to Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot, and private operators serve other cities too. Many Gujaratis prefer private buses for longer trips.
Taxis, Ride-Hailing and Auto-Rickshaws
Auto-rickshaws are the main local transport in Bhavnagar and are widely available for short city trips. There is no fixed fare system, so negotiate the price before you ride unless you are booking through an app.
- Ride-hailing: Ola is the most common app and offers both cars and auto-rickshaws. Uber availability is limited.
- Traditional taxis: Metered taxis are uncommon and fares are often negotiated. You can book cabs through your hotel, through apps, or with local operators offering metered or fixed-rate options.
- Safety: Match the driver and vehicle details to what the app shows, share your ride details with a contact, and avoid unregistered vehicles.
Renting a Car or Two-Wheeler
Self-drive car rentals can be arranged from major cities such as Ahmedabad or through local agencies. You will need a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national licence, plus your passport and a credit card for the deposit. A private car with a driver is also an option. Motorcycle and scooter rentals are available from local vendors and are charged daily or hourly; a licence with a motorcycle endorsement on your IDP is required, and helmets are mandatory.
If you do drive, remember that traffic runs on the left, seatbelts and helmets are compulsory, and speed limits vary by sign. Road quality varies widely: highways are good, city roads are congested, and rural roads may be unpaved. Watch for two-wheelers, pedestrians and animals, and expect parking to be difficult in crowded market areas.
Walking and Cycling
Walking is pleasant in specific spots rather than as a way to cross the whole city. Good pedestrian areas include Victoria Park, which has walking and jogging trails and is the only urban forest in Gujarat; the Gaurishankar Lake promenade; the Takhteshwar Temple area, which offers city views; and the Old City, with its narrow lanes and traditional architecture. There are no formal guided walking tours, so plan a self-guided route or ask your accommodation about a local guide.
Cycling is not well supported. There is little dedicated bicycle infrastructure, cycling on main roads is considered risky, and there is no formal city-wide bicycle rental programme, though some guesthouses or shops may rent bikes. On foot, be aware that sidewalks are often uneven or absent, so you may need to walk on the road edge. Avoid congested roads at peak hours and narrow market lanes, and avoid walking or cycling alone in poorly lit areas at night.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Bhavnagar Airport (code BHU) sits close to the city centre and has regular flights to Mumbai, including services by Alliance Air. There is no rail or metro link from the airport, so plan on a taxi or auto-rickshaw for the transfer. Booking through an app such as Ola or arranging a cab through your hotel are the most straightforward options; agree on the fare in advance if you are hailing a rickshaw directly.
Other Transport Notes
- There are no cable cars, funiculars or intra-city boat taxis, and no hop-on-hop-off tour buses. Local operators arrange private or group tours instead.
- The Ghogha–Dahej Ro-Pax ferry is for regional travel between Saurashtra and South Gujarat, not for getting around the city. Recreational boating is available at Gaurishankar Lake.
- Accessibility is limited on public transport and in older buildings. If you have mobility needs, private transport is recommended, and you should contact operators in advance. For groups or accessibility requirements, reach out to local tour operators well ahead of your trip.
