Getting Around Nagaon

Nagaon sits on the Kolong River, which divides the town into two distinct parts: Nagaon proper and Haibargaon. That split matters for a visitor, because some of the town's key transport links — including one of its two railway stations — are over in Haibargaon. Plan your movements with the river in mind.

Rail

Nagaon town has two railway stations of its own: one at Nagaon and another at Haibargaon (also known as Dhing gate). If your destination is on the Haibargaon side, arriving there saves you a cross-town trip.

The nearest railway junction is at Chaparmukh, which lies outside Nagaon. If you are coming or going on a long-distance train, you may well find yourself connecting through Chaparmukh rather than through the town's own stations, so factor a road leg into your plans.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Buses are the mainstay of getting to and from Nagaon, and the road connections are good. Plenty of government and private buses run between Guwahati and Nagaon, and there is real flexibility in timings rather than a single fixed departure. Services also run to Nagaon from Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Tezpur.

For a visitor, this means the bus is usually the simplest way in and out of town, with a choice of operators and departure times on the main routes.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are available for hire from all major destinations to Nagaon, so you can arrange a car rather than depending on bus timetables. For local movement around town, taxis and hired cars are the practical option to fall back on.

Walking

Because the Kolong River runs through the middle of Nagaon, the town is split into two parts, and getting between Nagaon and Haibargaon means crossing that divide. Walking is fine for short errands within whichever part of town you are in, but for anything that involves crossing from one side to the other, or reaching the railway stations and outlying areas, you will want a vehicle.

Getting There from the Airport

The nearest airport to Nagaon is Tezpur Airport. The nearest international airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati.

For most visitors arriving by air from outside the region, Guwahati will be the practical gateway. From Guwahati, the road route to Nagaon is well served: plenty of government and private buses make the trip, with flexible timings, and taxis are available for hire from the major destinations. The bus is the budget-friendly choice; a hired taxi gives you a direct, door-to-door run.

If you are coming in via Tezpur instead, buses from Tezpur to Nagaon are also available, and taxis can be hired for the same journey.
