Getting Around Visakhapatnam: A Practical Guide
Visakhapatnam, the largest city in Andhra Pradesh, offers visitors multiple transportation options for navigating the city and reaching it from beyond. As a major transport hub on India's east coast, the city has established public transit systems alongside taxis and ride-hailing services to help you move around.
Buses and Public Transport
Bus transit is the primary mode of public transport for getting around Visakhapatnam. The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) operates an extensive network of city buses serving commuters daily. Buses depart from several major stations throughout the city: Dwaraka Central Bus Station Complex, Maddilapalem bus station, MVP Colony bus station, Gajuwaka Bus station, Simhachalam bus station, Kurmannapalem bus station, and Madhurawada bus station.
There are two main types of buses for suburban travel:
- City Ordinary buses are identified by orange or red coloring. They stop at most bus stops along their routes and serve almost all suburban routes throughout the city. These buses are more frequent but can become crowded during peak hours on weekdays.
- Metro Express buses are blue and white and run on major routes without stopping at every bus stop. They offer a faster journey with higher fares than City Ordinary buses. Many feature digital display boards showing route information in English and Telugu, cushioned seats, and air suspension for added comfort.
Bus fares are very affordable. Tickets can be purchased directly on the bus. Alternatively, you can buy an RTC-Pass, a monthly pass that allows unlimited travel on any APSRTC bus within the city limits. An ordinary RTC-Pass costs ₹750 and can be renewed monthly. Buses operate frequently on high-demand routes, with a minimum frequency of one bus every 40 minutes on all routes.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing Services
For more direct travel, ride-hailing companies operate throughout the city. Ola and Uber serve daily commutes across various localities, while Rapido offers single-person rides. Private tour operators also provide transportation services on major routes, and mini-vans are available for both short and long-distance trips ranging from 10 to 100 kilometers.
Train Services
Visakhapatnam Junction is a major railway station and serves as the headquarters of the South Coast Railway zone. The city is connected to several cities across India by rail, with trains on the Kolkata–Chennai line stopping at the station. Although Visakhapatnam functions as a passenger terminus where trains do not travel further, it is served by most types of trains. Train berths can be reserved online through Indian Railways, though availability can be difficult even with a month's advance notice during peak travel periods. If you plan to travel by train, verify timings directly with Indian Railways as schedules change periodically.
Metro and Tram Systems (Planned)
Vizag Metro is an approved mass transit project under development. The metro system will consist of multiple corridors designed to expand public transit capacity significantly. Additionally, the government of Andhra Pradesh has planned trackless tram services for the city, which will serve complementary routes to support the city's growing transportation needs.
Walking and Cycling
Cycling paths are under development in Visakhapatnam. Plans include bicycle stations throughout downtown areas, with cycling tracks being earmarked on major roads. Cycle rickshaws historically served the city but have largely disappeared and are now confined to very small areas. As an alternative to motorized transport, cycling is becoming increasingly viable for short trips within the central parts of the city.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Visakhapatnam International Airport is located to the northeast and serves as the main gateway for the city's domestic and international civilian air traffic. The airport handles flights to major Indian cities including Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai, as well as international destinations. From the airport, you can reach the city center by taxi, ride-hailing services (Ola or Uber), or pre-arranged car hire. The airport is situated opposite National Highway 16, which connects it to the city's main road network.
Arriving by Other Modes
If traveling by train, Visakhapatnam Junction railway station is well-connected within the city by buses from multiple stations. The city is accessible by road via National Highway 16, a dual-carriageway connecting Visakhapatnam to Chennai and Kolkata through Bhubaneswar and Vijayawada. Long-distance buses operated by APSRTC and private operators serve almost every major city and town, with several luxury bus services (Volvo fleet) available from Chennai, Bangalore, Vijayawada, and Hyderabad. It is advisable to reserve bus tickets at least three days in advance.
