Getting Around Nandyal: A Practical Guide for Visitors

Nandyal is a regional commercial and pilgrimage centre at the eastern edge of the Nallamala Hills in Andhra Pradesh, and the gateway to sites such as Yaganti, Srisailam and the Belum Caves. It has no airport and no metro or tram system, so getting around relies on a familiar mix of auto-rickshaws, taxis, buses and trains. This guide explains how those pieces fit together so you can plan your movements with confidence.

How Tourists Move Around the City

Within Nandyal town, auto-rickshaws are the most common means of transport for short hops, and rented cars or taxis are the other standard option. Taxi hire charges in Nandyal are notably high compared with other parts of India, so it is worth treating taxis as a considered choice rather than a default.

For trips to Mahanandi, Yaganti and the Belum Caves, hire a car or taxi rather than relying on local town transport. Several of the region's highlights — Belum Caves, the Srisailam corridor, Ahobilam, Mantralayam and Kurnool — can be reached as day trips, with local guides and budget transport available.

Rail Network

Nandyal Junction (station code NDL) is the town's railhead, administered under the Guntur railway division of South Central Railways, and it functions as a rail hub for the area. Rail is generally described as the most reliable and comfortable option for intercity travel.

There is no metro or tram network in Nandyal — the railway is the only rail-based mode, and it is oriented towards intercity journeys rather than moving around town.

Buses and Other Public Transport

The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) operates bus services from Nandyal bus station, which is the town's bus hub. Private operators run alongside the state service on many routes.

Nandyal is well connected by road, with NH 18 the main highway serving the town. Roads within Nandyal are narrow, and the Municipal Corporation has plans to widen them — worth knowing if you are driving yourself.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis and app cabs provide door-to-door trips and are the practical option for longer journeys, including airport runs and day trips to surrounding temples and caves. App-based ride-hailing such as Ola operates where available, but availability can be limited, so it is worth having a local taxi contact as a backup. Because taxi hire charges in Nandyal are notably high by Indian standards, confirm the fare before you set off.

Walkability

Walking is feasible in central areas, particularly around Market Road and Station Road, where basic urban services such as supermarkets, pharmacies and ATMs are concentrated. Budget lodges and guesthouses also cluster near the transport hubs, which makes a car-free arrival reasonably convenient. Outside the centre, the narrow roads and spread-out layout make walking less practical, and you will want an auto-rickshaw or taxi.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Nandyal has no airport of its own. The nearest airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad (Shamshabad), roughly 270 km away. Kurnool Airport is also within reach at about 50 km from Nandyal, and Vijayawada/Gannavaram Airport is another option for reaching the region.

Whichever airport you use, the onward leg into Nandyal is by road or rail rather than by air, so build in time for the transfer and book intercity trains or buses ahead where you can.
