Getting Around Kakinada
Kakinada is a compact, well-planned port city, and getting around it is generally straightforward. Within the city, the main means of transport are taxis, autorickshaws, and mini-buses. For a visitor, the autorickshaw is the most characteristic way to move about, and Kakinada is noted as one of the few places where you can enjoy an open-top rickshaw ride across town, taking in the breeze and the colourful market streets. If you prefer a quicker, more personal option, autorickshaws are readily available for point-to-point trips, while mini-buses connect various places within the town.
Rail Network
Kakinada is served by three railway stations: Kakinada Town (also referred to as Kakinada Junction), Kakinada Port, and Samalkot Junction. Of these, Samalkot Junction is the key station for long-distance travel, since it lies on the Chennai–Visakhapatnam–Howrah line, where almost all express trains stop. This makes Samalkot the practical gateway for connecting Kakinada with important places across the country. Kakinada itself is connected to the capital city, Hyderabad, by a direct train that covers the journey overnight.
If you arrive at Samalkot, frequent bus, taxi, and auto connections can take you into Kakinada in roughly 20 to 25 minutes. There is no metro or tram network in the city, so rail travel here is about intercity connections rather than moving around within Kakinada.
Buses and Public Transport
Road transport in and around Kakinada is largely provided by the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC). Good roads connect the city with places throughout the state and with major cities such as Chennai and Bangalore. APSRTC runs non-stop services to Visakhapatnam and Rajahmundry throughout the year, and these are a dependable option for regional travel. Within the city, mini-buses link different parts of town, complementing the autorickshaws and taxis.
Private bus operators also provide transport services to various parts of the country. For longer journeys, operators such as Kesineni Travels run A/C, deluxe, and non-A/C services to Hyderabad, with onward connections to major cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, and Mumbai. Sree Kaleswari Travels offers Volvo A/C semi-sleeper service to Hyderabad. National Highway-214 runs through the heart of the city, which helps make road travel convenient.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and autorickshaws are the major means of transport within Kakinada. Taxis are a comfortable choice for trips with luggage or for reaching the railway stations, while autorickshaws are the handiest option for short hops around town. For travel between Kakinada and nearby Samalkot, taxis and autos are among the frequent connections available.
Walkability
Kakinada is known for its well-planned layout and modern infrastructure, and it has been recognised as one of India's most livable and cleanest cities among those with a population under one million. That reputation makes walking a pleasant way to explore parts of the city, particularly the market streets, where the open-top rickshaw ride is a popular way to take in the sights. For longer distances across town, however, you will likely want to rely on autorickshaws, taxis, or mini-buses.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Kakinada does not have its own airport, so visitors fly into one of two nearby airports and continue by road or rail.
- Rajahmundry Airport is the nearest airport to Kakinada. It has services to Hyderabad, Chennai, and Visakhapatnam. From Rajahmundry, you can reach Kakinada by road or rail.
- Visakhapatnam Airport is the nearest international airport. It is served by all major airline operators, with flights to all the big cities in the country. From Visakhapatnam, continue to Kakinada by road or rail.
Whichever airport you use, the onward leg is by surface transport. If you arrive by train instead, remember that Samalkot Junction is the station where most express trains stop, and frequent bus, taxi, and auto connections cover the final stretch into Kakinada in about 20 to 25 minutes.
