Getting Around Kadapa

Kadapa is a mid-sized city in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, and getting around it is generally straightforward, though it rewards a little planning. The city has no metro or tram system, so visitors rely on a mix of walking, buses, trains, auto-rickshaws and taxis. Central Kadapa is compact enough to explore on foot, but for longer trips across town or out to the airport you will need a vehicle.

Walking

Walking is the easiest way to get around central Kadapa, particularly in the busy commercial pockets around Koti Reddy Circle and Akula Veedhi, where shops, cafés and everyday services are clustered together. Outside these central areas, however, walking becomes less practical, and you will want to use a vehicle for longer distances.

One thing to keep in mind is the climate. Kadapa has a hot semi-arid climate with high temperatures year-round, and summers are especially uncomfortable, with hot and humid conditions. Winters are comparatively milder and are the best time to visit, so if you plan to walk a lot, that is the season to do it.

Buses and Public Transport

Public transit in Kadapa is functional but less comprehensive and less frequent than in India's larger cities, so allow some extra time and plan your routes. Bus services are operated by APSRTC (Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation), which runs services from various destinations within Kadapa district as well as from other cities across South India. Online booking is available, though coverage is not seamless across all areas.

For travel into Kadapa from elsewhere, APSRTC buses are a practical option: the city has good road connectivity to major places including Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Nellore and Kurnool.

Rail

Kadapa has its own railway station, located on the Mumbai–Chennai line, one of the busiest lines in the south coast region. A railway line connects the city to major cities, making the train a useful option for arriving in or leaving Kadapa. Note that a new Kadapa–Bangalore railway line was under construction at the time of the source information, so check current schedules before relying on that route.

There is no metro service in Kadapa, and no tram network. Transport here relies on buses and trains, which means a bit of planning is required compared with larger Indian cities.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

For point-to-point trips, especially outside the walkable centre, taxis and auto-rickshaws fill the gap left by the bus network. Because public transit coverage is not seamless across all areas, having a taxi or auto-rickshaw option is useful for reaching neighbourhoods and attractions that buses do not serve conveniently.

Cycling

Bicycles are readily available in Kadapa and the roads are generally well-maintained, which makes cycling a viable way to cover longer distances than you would on foot. There are no dedicated bike lanes, though awareness campaigns on cyclist safety are ongoing. Be aware that the summer heat makes cycling uncomfortable, so it is best suited to the cooler months or early mornings.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Kadapa Airport (CDP) is a domestic airport located at the outskirts of the city, north-west of Kadapa. It has service from Hyderabad and Belgaum on Trujet Airlines. Because the airport sits outside the city, you will need ground transport to reach your accommodation — arrange a taxi or auto-rickshaw, or check with your hotel about pickup, since the airport is not within the walkable central area.
