Getting Around Anantapur

Anantapur (officially Ananthapuramu) is a city in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, sitting on National Highway 44 and acting as a natural stopover between Bengaluru and Hyderabad. It has no metro or tram system, so getting around relies on a familiar mix of auto-rickshaws, city buses, taxis and rental cars. Telugu is the official and widely spoken language, with Urdu, Hindi, Kannada and Tamil also spoken by significant minorities — useful to know if you need to ask for directions or negotiate a fare.

Arriving by Train

Anantapur Railway Station (station code ATP) is the city's rail gateway. It sits in the Guntakal railway division of the South Central Railway zone and is classified as an A-category station, meaning it handles a good volume of traffic and long-distance services. The station lies on the Bangalore–Guntakal line, and trains that stop here include the Karnataka Express, the Rajdhani Express, the Prasanthi Express and the Kacheguda–Bangalore Express.

For a visitor, the practical point is that Anantapur is well connected by rail to major cities such as Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore, with regular and frequent services. If you are coming from Hyderabad or Bangalore, the Garib Rath service is one option. Larger rail junctions nearby include Guntakal Junction and Bangalore City, which can be useful if your route requires a change.

The Railway Station area is itself one of the city's recognised neighbourhoods and landmarks, so you will find autos and local transport waiting when you step out.

Buses and Public Transport

The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) operates bus services from the Anantapur bus station, including city buses on various routes within Anantapur. For a visitor moving between the bus station, the railway station and the main commercial circles, these city buses are the cheapest option.

For longer journeys, APSRTC runs services connecting Anantapur with Hyderabad, Tirupati, Bangalore and Vijayawada. Private operators also serve the city, including KSRTC, VRL, SRS Travels and Orange Tours & Travels, with many private travels running to Hyderabad and services to Bengaluru and to nearby towns and villages. A private service also runs daily from Kurnool to Vellore via Anantapur. The bus station is one of the city's main landmarks, so it is easy to locate and use as a reference point.

Autos, Taxis and Rental Cars

Within the city, auto-rickshaws are the standard choice for short distances, along with APSRTC city buses, taxis and rental cars. Autos are best for hops between neighbourhoods and landmarks such as Clock Tower, Sapthagiri Circle, Srikantam Circle, the Railway Station area, the Bus Station, Government Hospital and Court Road.

For longer trips — to nearby sights such as Lepakshi Temple, Penukonda Fort or the ISKCON Temple, or onward to another city — taxis and rental cars are the practical option. Private cab operators also cover the routes to and from the airports and major cities.

Walking

Anantapur has a semi-arid climate, hot and dry for most of the year. Summer begins in late February and peaks in May with average highs around 37 °C, while winters are dry and mild with average temperatures in the low twenties. Walking is therefore most comfortable in the cooler winter months from late November to early February, and least comfortable in the pre-monsoon and summer heat.

One practical caution: the railway overbridge near Clock Tower, a long-standing landmark connecting the Newtown, is closed and under demolition until a new four-lane flyover is functional. Plan your walking route around this, as it affects how you cross between the heart of the city and NH44.

Getting There from the Airport

Anantapur has no airport of its own. The nearest international airport is Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, roughly 190 kilometres away, and it is the main option for both domestic and international arrivals. From there, you can reach Anantapur by taxi, private cab or KSRTC bus.

Two other airports are worth knowing about. Puttaparthi (Sri Sathya Sai Airport) is closer but has only limited domestic flights; from there you would use a taxi or local bus. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad is much further away, and from there you would use an APSRTC service or a private taxi.

Because Anantapur sits on National Highway 44, the road link from Bengaluru is direct, and NH 44 also connects the city northward towards Hyderabad. Other highways serving the area include NH 205, which links towards Chennai via Renigunta, and routes towards Chittoor, Bellary and Tumkur.
