Orientation and how people get around
Parung is a town and district in Bogor Regency, just southwest of South Jakarta, and it sits on the western alternative road between Jakarta and Bogor — meaning through-traffic passes right through town. The commercial heart is Pasar Parung, a traditional market spread along both sides of the main road. That layout is the single most useful thing to know as a visitor: the market area is where the town's activity concentrates, and it is also where daily traffic congestion is worst. Plan your movements around that bottleneck rather than through it.
In practice, getting around relies on road transport: buses connecting to the wider Jakarta area, taxis, ride-hailing cars, and walking in the immediate market area.
Buses and public transport
Parung has no direct bus link to Jakarta; bus journeys involve at least one transfer. The relevant service is run by TransJakarta, with the connection departing from the Universitas Indonesia station and arriving at Minangkabau station. Buses on this route run roughly every fifteen minutes, the fare is around a dollar, and the ride itself takes a little over an hour and a half — with transfers, allow closer to an hour and forty minutes door to door.
- Operator: TransJakarta (phone 1500102; website transjakarta.co.id)
- Key connection points: Universitas Indonesia station and Minangkabau station
- Expect to change buses rather than ride a single vehicle all the way
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis are a straightforward option for reaching Jakarta and for trips where a bus transfer is inconvenient. A taxi from Parung to Jakarta takes roughly half an hour and costs in the region of $17–21. Ride-hailing through Grab is therefore available alongside conventional metered taxis.
Driving yourself is cited as both the cheapest and the fastest way to make the Jakarta trip, at around $5–8 — worth knowing if you have access to a car, though you will be sharing the road with the congestion around Pasar Parung.
Walking
Walking makes sense for exploring the market itself, which stretches along both sides of the main road and is the town's commercial centre — and, notably, home to what is widely acknowledged as the biggest ornamental fish market in Indonesia, if not Southeast Asia. Be aware that this same stretch of road carries heavy daily traffic, so walking here means negotiating busy roadside conditions rather than strolling a pedestrian zone.
Getting in from the airport
What it does establish is the road geography: Parung lies on the western alternative route between Jakarta and Bogor, and the drive from Parung to Jakarta takes about half an hour by car or taxi. The practical implication is that a taxi or ride-hailing car from the Jakarta side is the natural way in, with Blue Bird, Grab, Express Taxi and Gamya all operating in the area. If you prefer public transport, the TransJakarta connection via Universitas Indonesia and Minangkabau stations is the documented option, but budget extra time for the transfer.
Practical tips
- Time your movements around Pasar Parung rather than through peak congestion on the main road.
- For Jakarta, weigh a taxi (roughly half an hour, $17–21) against the cheaper but slower TransJakarta route with its transfer.
- Keep the TransJakarta hotline (1500102) and Blue Bird's number (+62 21 794 1234) handy.
