Getting Around Cimahi
Cimahi sits immediately west of Bandung in West Java, within the Bandung Metropolitan Area, and is well connected to its larger neighbour by road and rail. For a visitor, the practical picture is simple: the city itself is compact and largely covered by minivans and ride-hailing, while the train station and the road links to Bandung are your gateways in and out.
Arriving by Train
Cimahi's railway station is the anchor of its public transport network, sitting on the line between Cikampek and Bandung. The station is served by a mix of executive, business and economy class services, so you can choose a fare and comfort level to suit your budget.
- To and from Bandung: Frequent executive class trains run to Bandung's central station, making this the easiest rail hop between the two cities.
- To and from Jakarta: Executive class trains connect to Gambir station in Central Jakarta, while economy class services run to Pasar Senen station.
- Longer distances: There are also services toward Cirebon, Purwakarta, Cibatu (near Garut), Purwokerto via Tasikmalaya, and a combined-class train to Surabaya via Cirebon and Semarang.
Buying tickets at the station counter or through the usual Indonesian rail booking channels is the standard approach; for the popular Bandung and Jakarta services, booking ahead is wise.
Buses and Intercity Connections
Cimahi has no large long-distance bus terminal of its own, so most intercity bus travel is arranged through Bandung's two main terminals:
- Cicaheum terminal (East Bandung) handles destinations to the east, including Central and East Java.
- Leuwi Panjang terminal (South Bandung) handles destinations to the west, including Jakarta and the port of Merak.
Some operators do serve Cimahi directly. Budiman, for example, runs several routes from the bus stop at Cimahi Mall, with frequent departures to Tasikmalaya and daily services to cities in Central Java such as Magelang, Solo, Yogyakarta, Cilacap and Wonosobo. If your destination matches one of these, you can avoid trekking into Bandung first.
Angkot and Local Minivans
The workhorse of local movement is the angkot — a public minivan running fixed routes. These are the cheapest way to cover short distances within Cimahi and to link up with Bandung.
- Green-coloured angkot run frequently between Leuwi Panjang terminal in South Bandung and Cimahi.
- From Cicaheum terminal in East Bandung, there is no single direct angkot to Cimahi; you will need to change routes, for instance by switching at Bandung's railway station.
Fares are paid in cash to the driver or conductor on board. Routes are not always clearly signposted for newcomers, so asking your hotel or a local which angkot to take is the most reliable approach.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Ride-hailing apps are widely used in the Bandung metropolitan area and are the most straightforward option for visitors who want a door-to-door trip without navigating angkot routes or haggling. Conventional taxis are also available. For trips between Cimahi and Bandung, or to and from the railway station, ride-hailing is usually the simplest choice.
Getting There by Car
Cimahi is well served by road, which matters if you are arriving by car, taxi or ride-hailing from elsewhere in the region.
- The Purbaleunyi toll road links Cimahi to Purwakarta and onward to Jakarta, and to Bandung.
- The Great Post Road — the original trunk road between Cimahi and Bandung — remains an important route between the two cities.
- A major trunk road runs west from Cimahi toward Cianjur and the Puncak pass.
- A smaller road connects Cimahi to Lembang in the mountains to the northwest.
Walkability
Cimahi is a densely built city, and its central areas — around the railway station and commercial streets — can be covered on foot for short errands and meals. For anything beyond a short stroll, though, the heat, traffic and spread-out destinations make walking impractical as a primary way to get around. Plan to combine walking with angkot or ride-hailing.
Getting from the Airport
Cimahi has no airport of its own. The nearest major gateway is Bandung's Husein Sastranegara International Airport, and the larger international option is Soekarno–Hatta International Airport serving Jakarta. From either, the practical route into Cimahi is by road — taxi or ride-hailing — or by train via Bandung, since Cimahi's rail connections run through Bandung's central station. If you arrive in Jakarta, the executive trains from Gambir to Cimahi station are a comfortable alternative to the long drive.
Practical Tips
- Keep small cash on hand for angkot fares; ride-hailing and taxis can be paid via app or cash.
- Use Cimahi railway station as your reference point — it connects you to Bandung, Jakarta and beyond.
- For intercity buses, check whether your operator departs from Cimahi Mall before heading into Bandung.
- Ask locally about angkot routes; signage is limited and routes can be confusing for first-time visitors.
