Getting from Juanda International Airport (SUB)
Juanda International Airport is located approximately 12 kilometers southeast of the city center. The airport features two terminals: Terminal 1 for domestic flights and Terminal 2 for international flights, with a free 15-minute shuttle service connecting the two.
To reach the Purabaya Bus Terminal (also known as Bungurasih), which is located several kilometers west of the city, travelers can take a Damri Bus from either airport terminal. The fare for this shuttle is Rp 25,000 per person.
Rail and Local Transit
While there are several stations serving the area—including Wonokromo, Gubeng, Pasar Turi, and Semut—commuter city trains are limited in scope, primarily serving specific sections of Surabaya and Sidoarjo. For long-distance travel across Java, the city serves as a major hub with two main stations located in the heart of downtown: Surabaya Pasar Turi and Surabaya Gubeng.
Passengers can book long-distance train tickets at self-service kiosks in major stations or at local convenience stores like Alfamart and Indomaret. Reservations for premium classes generally need to be made between 90 days and 24 hours before departure, while same-day purchases are only available at the station ticket counter.
Buses and Regional Transport
The city's municipal bus network includes the Suroboyo Bus and Trans Semanggi Suroboyo. These systems utilize modern, air-conditioned vehicles, including electric options, and provide dedicated seating for elderly passengers and women.
For regional travel, the Purabaya (Bungurasih) terminal serves as the main hub for buses traveling to other parts of East Java and beyond. When using these services, it is advisable to ignore persistent touts (known locally as "calo") who may offer inflated prices; instead, check official price lists posted near platform exits or book through reputable online applications.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are widely available throughout the city. For a reliable experience, travelers can use the Blue Bird Group (available via street hailing or app) or the SM fleet, which features an all-electric vehicle lineup. When taking a taxi, ensure the meter is turned on; note that passengers are responsible for paying any additional toll fees or parking charges not included in the base fare.
Ride-hailing apps such as Gojek, Grab, and Maxim offer efficient ways to navigate the city with upfront pricing. These services provide both cars and motorbikes (ojek). Motorbikes are particularly useful for navigating heavy rush-hour traffic quickly, while cars are recommended for those traveling with luggage or during rainy weather. Dedicated pick-up points for these apps are located at major shopping malls and train stations.
Traditional Transport
Traditional cycle rickshaws, known as becaks, remain a common sight in the outskirts of Surabaya. These provide a local way to travel short distances. Additionally, motor-powered cycle rickshaws (Becak Motor) are also available for longer hauls across several blocks.
