Getting Around Sidoarjo
Sidoarjo is a densely populated regency immediately south of Surabaya, and it functions as part of the wider Gerbangkertosusila metropolitan area. For a visitor, that geography matters: the northern districts such as Waru and Taman adjoin Surabaya directly and act as gateways between the two, while the regency's own urban core clusters around the district of Sidoarjo. Practically speaking, most trips are short hops within a district, longer runs along the main corridors toward Surabaya, or transfers to and from the airport in Sedati on the coast.
Rail
Sidoarjo has a railway station, Sidoarjo Railway Station, on Jalan Diponegoro in Lemahputro. It is served by daily local and commuter trains connecting the regency with Bojonegoro, Lamongan, Surabaya, and Pasuruan. For a visitor, this makes the train a straightforward option for reaching Surabaya or for continuing east toward Pasuruan, and it is the only rail-based public transport described for the area. There is no metro or tram network in Sidoarjo; rail here means the conventional and commuter services calling at the station.

Buses and Other Public Transport
The regency's public-transport picture is dominated instead by the rail commuter service and by road-based options. Roads are the backbone of movement here: the Waru–Juanda Toll Road links the regency to the airport, and the Surabaya–Gempol Toll Road carries traffic southbound, improving the mobility of both goods and people. Visitors should expect to rely on rail for longer fixed-route journeys and on road transport for everything else.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Ride-hailing is the most visitor-friendly way to move around Sidoarjo. Gojek operates in the regency, and you can book either a motorbike or a car through the service. Motorbike rides are the quicker choice for short, congested hops; cars suit groups, luggage, or trips to the airport. Because the service is app-based, fares are arranged through the app rather than negotiated on the street.
Car Rental and Self-Driving
If you prefer to drive yourself, rental agencies operate in the regency, including near the airport. One example is Rentalinx on Jalan Green Mansion, Tambak, Banjar Kemuning, in Sedati, close to Juanda International Airport. It runs around the clock and offers passenger cars, MPVs, and commuter vans, with self-drive options, chauffeured packages, daily all-in rates, monthly leases, and airport transfers. Rates start from Rp 550,000 per day. This is a practical choice if your plans include the coastal districts or the toll-road corridors, where having your own vehicle simplifies the trip.
Walkability
Sidoarjo is a densely populated, urbanizing regency, and its most built-up districts — particularly those in the north adjoining Surabaya — are the most amenable to walking for short errands. The urban center is also where the modern shopping centers are concentrated, including Lippo Plaza, Ciplaz Sidoarjo, Transmart Carrefour, and the Suncity Superblock, which give pedestrians clear destinations. That said, the regency as a whole spreads across a wide area, and coastal districts such as Sedati and Porong sit at low elevations (0–3 meters) among shrimp and milkfish ponds, so distances between places are generally too great to cover on foot. Treat walking as a way to cover a neighborhood or a shopping cluster, not as a means of getting between districts.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Juanda International Airport sits in the Sedati district on Sidoarjo's coast and is one of the country's busiest air gateways. The most direct road link into the regency is the Waru–Juanda Toll Road, which connects straight to the airport. From the terminal, you have three practical ways onward:
- Ride-hailing: Gojek serves the area with both motorbike and car options, letting you book a ride from the airport to your destination in Sidoarjo or onward to Surabaya.
- Car rental with airport transfer: Agencies such as Rentalinx in Sedati, near the airport, offer airport transfers alongside self-drive and chauffeured rentals.
- Rail connections: Sidoarjo Railway Station is served by daily local and commuter trains to Surabaya and other towns, so the train is a useful option once you have reached the station from the airport.
Because the airport lies within Sidoarjo rather than in Surabaya proper, arrivals heading for the regency's own towns have a shorter trip than those continuing north to the city.
