Getting Around Jepara
Jepara is a town on the north coast of Central Java, northeast of Semarang and not far from Mount Muria. It is the main town of Jepara Regency and is best known as the centre of Javanese teak wood carving and as the birthplace of Kartini. For a visitor, getting around is fairly simple, but it helps to know in advance which options actually exist, because the town has no rail, metro, or tram service and taxis can be hard to find.
Rail, Metro and Trams
There is no rail, metro, or tram network in Jepara. Visitors should not plan on using trains to move around the town or to reach it directly. The practical long-distance connections are by road, using buses, shuttle vans, or taxis.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Jepara is served by a bus station and by several private bus and shuttle operators, which are the main way to arrive from other cities.
- Jepara Bus Station (Terminal Jepara) on Jl MT Haryono is served by buses to various locations including Jakarta and Surabaya. Note that the station is described as less maintained and can feel uncomfortable for foreign tourists.
- Bejeu Bus garage on Jl. RM. Sosro Diningrat in Ngabul, Tahunan, Jepara, is run by Bejeu, a bus company based in Jepara. It serves Jakarta, Bandung, Denpasar, Merak, Cimahi, Ciledug, Pati, Pekalongan, and other destinations. These buses have air conditioning and WiFi.
- Daytrans bus shop (Trio Tour Travel Jepara – Daytrans Jepara) on Jl. Letjen Suprapto is on the road to Kartini pier, near homestay 89. It is a shuttle option from Yogyakarta.
- Rimba Raya bus shop (Kantor Rimba Raya SCJ) in Jobokuto II, near Alun-Alun Jepara, has air conditioning and a minimal toilet, with many food stalls nearby. It serves Solo, Semarang, and Yogyakarta.
From Semarang, small, mostly non-air-conditioned buses leave Terboyo bus terminal daily between 05:00 and 17:00. Be aware that there are no luggage compartments on these small buses, and you may be charged twice if you put your backpack on an empty seat. More comfortable air-conditioned shuttle vans, known locally as travel, run from Semarang, Yogyakarta, and Solo, mostly departing from the various agencies' offices. These shuttle vans have later departures than the cheap intercity buses.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are a bit hard to find in Jepara, so it is worth arranging one in advance or asking your accommodation for help.
- From Semarang you can take a taxi and bargain a price; even on the meter it should not come out much higher than the agreed rate.
- If you speak Indonesian, you can call Raja, a taxi service using a normal SUV-type car.
- If you do not speak Indonesian, try going to Jepara Indah Hotel or Kencana Hotel to arrange transport.
- The ride-hailing service Gojek is available in Jepara, but note that there are no Gojek taxis — only the standard ride-hailing services.
- Hotel Segoro, at the north end of town near the gas station, has a travel service and can also charter cars.
Walkability and Local Transport
Walking is possible in the town centre, but for longer hops the local options are limited and informal.
- Becak (cycle rickshaws) are fairly easy to find and are a practical way to cover short distances.
- Motorbikes can be rented from some of the motorcycle dealers or at the Segoro Hotel, which is a good option if you are comfortable riding and want flexibility.
- Taxis, as noted, are scarce, so do not rely on hailing one on the street.
Getting from the Airport into the City
The source material does not describe an airport serving Jepara or a direct airport-to-city transfer. In practice, visitors reach Jepara by road from other cities in Central Java. The connections described are:
- Small, mostly non-air-conditioned buses from Semarang's Terboyo bus terminal, departing daily 05:00–17:00.
- Air-conditioned shuttle vans (travel) from Semarang, Yogyakarta, and Solo, mostly departing from the agencies' offices, with later departures than the cheap intercity buses.
- A taxi from Semarang, with a bargained price.
If you are arriving by air, plan to reach one of these cities first and then continue to Jepara by bus, shuttle van, or taxi. Confirm current schedules and pickup points with your accommodation or the operator, since services and departure points can change.
Practical Tips
- Arrange your onward transport before you arrive, especially if you do not speak Indonesian — hotels such as Jepara Indah, Kencana, and Segoro can help.
- For intercity travel, the air-conditioned shuttle vans are more comfortable than the small local buses, and they run later in the day.
- Keep small change handy for becak rides and local buses.
- If you plan to rent a motorbike, ask at the Segoro Hotel or a local motorcycle dealer.
