Getting Around Székesfehérvár

Székesfehérvár sits at the crossroads of central Hungary, an important rail and road junction between Lake Balaton and Lake Velence. For a visitor, the good news is that the city centre is compact and easy to explore on foot, while buses fill in the gaps for sights on the outskirts.

Arriving by Train

The city's train station lies roughly a kilometre south of the town centre and can easily be walked. Rail connections from Budapest are very frequent, with all trains departing from Budapest-Déli station rather than Nyugati or Keleti. Two broad types of service are available: an hourly commuter train (labelled személy) that stops at almost every station along the way, and an hourly intercity service (labelled gyors) running alternately to Szombathely and Nagykanizsa, which stops only at Kelenföld en route. Timetables can be checked on MÁV's website.

From the train station, Alba Volán runs frequent bus connections into the town centre, and City Taxi is another option if you prefer a car.

Arriving by Bus

The bus station sits at Piac tér, just south of Piac square and a short walk around the corner from the old town centre. There are direct connections from Budapest's Népliget bus station. Fares are exactly the same whether you take the bus or the train, so the main advantage of the bus is that the city bus station is located right in the downtown. There are also services onward to Pápa.

Arriving by Car

The M7 motorway runs just south of Székesfehérvár and is the fastest way to arrive. From the exit, merge onto road 63, which will eventually take you into Piac Square.

Getting Around by Bus

Local buses are the main form of public transport for visitors heading beyond the walkable centre. Note that buses only accept cash on board, so keep some forints handy.

Some sights require a bus or car to reach. If you are going to Bory's Castle, take bus #26 or #26A from the bus station, or bus #32 from the train station. None of these buses take you directly to the castle, so tell the driver you are going to Bory Vár — otherwise you will not know when to get off.

Taxis

Taxis are readily available in the city. City Taxi can be reached at +36 22 311111. Because Székesfehérvár lies some distance outside Budapest, taking a taxi all the way from the capital is by far the most expensive option.

Getting from the Airport

If you are arriving at Ferihegy (Budapest's airport) and going directly to Székesfehérvár, Zona Taxi offers a fixed rate of Ft 20,000. This is a convenient option if you would rather not negotiate the train or bus connections with luggage.

On Foot

The old town centre is compact and pleasant to explore on foot, and the train station is close enough to walk into town. For most of the central sights, walking is the simplest and most enjoyable way to get around.
