The New Territories is the largest region in Hong Kong, encompassing a vast area that includes both bustling urban centers and rural countryside. Because of its size, transportation options vary depending on whether you are exploring developed "new towns" or the more rural outskirts.
Rail and Metro Networks
The rail network provides extensive coverage across the region, connecting various districts and offering a reliable way to move between urban hubs. Key lines include:
- East Rail Line: This line serves as a major artery, connecting areas such as Sha Tin, Tai Po, and Sheung Shui. It also provides access toward the border with mainland China.
- Tuen Ma Line: A long east-west corridor that connects Tuen Mun to Wu Kai Sha, passing through several key locations including Tin Shui Wai and the former airport site at Kai Tak.
- Tseung Kwan O Line: A shorter line serving the North Point area toward LOHAS Park.

Getting from the Airport

Taxis, Cycling, and Walkability
The experience of getting around varies significantly based on your chosen mode of transport and destination:
- Taxis: While transportation is generally convenient in western areas like Tuen Mun or Yuen Long, a taxi may be necessary to reach more remote locations, such as Sai Kung.
- Cycling: Unlike the crowded streets of Kowloon, the New Territories is considered a "cyclist's paradise" featuring quiet countryside roads and dedicated paths. A dedicated network called the NT Cycle Track Network stretches across the region, with several bike rental shops located along the route.
- Ferry: For those heading to coastal areas like Tai O, a ferry service operates from Tuen Mun Ferry Pier.
Important Travel Notes
Be aware of "frontier closed areas" near the border with mainland China. It is illegal for non-residents to enter these zones (including Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau MTR stations) without a permit, except for those specifically crossing the border. A limited number of Tourism Closed Area Permits are available online for tourists wishing to visit the town of Sha Tau Kok.
