Getting from the Airport to Kowloon
Visitors arriving at Hong Kong International Airport have several options for reaching the Kowloon area. For a fast and direct journey, the Airport Express train provides a 20-minute trip to the Kowloon MTR station in south-west Kowloon. Alternatively, Citybus offers several routes from the airport terminal; these bus options are more affordable than the express train and stop at various locations including Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui.
Rail and Metro Networks
The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is a primary way to navigate Kowloon. Several lines converge on the peninsula, providing extensive coverage:
- The Tsuen Wan Line runs under Nathan Road with regular stops throughout the district.
- The Kwun Tong Line serves the eastern portion of the corridor.
- The Tung Chung Line provides access to West Kowloon and other areas.
- The Tuen Ma line offers connections to various stations closer to the shore.
For those traveling from Hong Kong Island, the MTR is a popular choice. Travelers can catch trains at major hubs like Admiralty or the Exhibition Centre to reach destinations such as Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok East, or Kowloon Tong.
Buses and Minibuses
A wide variety of local bus routes serve the Kowloon peninsula, making them a practical way to get around. Specific routes provide access to different regions:
- Routes 5 and 6 offer travel from the Star Ferry pier toward various parts of the peninsula.
- Routes 40 and 214 serve hillside developments.
- Minibuses and feeder buses are available at many MTR stations to connect passengers to more localized areas.
Additionally, there are red minibus hubs located in districts such as Mong Kok and Kwun Tong for local transit.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis provide a personalized way to travel within Kowloon, with fares described as reasonable for local trips. However, be aware that traveling by taxi across the harbor from Hong Kong Island can be slow and expensive due to traffic. Some taxis only operate on one side of the harbor; in these cases, look for ranks specifically marked for "Cross-harbour trips" to ensure you are at a designated stop.
Walking and Local Navigation
A significant amount of movement within Kowloon is done on foot. While sidewalks can be narrow and crowded—especially in the evenings—the area features many small alleys that serve as shortcuts to local shops and restaurants. In Tsim Sha Tsui, visitors may prefer using the climate-controlled underground tunnel network to travel between MTR stations when covering longer distances on foot.
Crossing the Harbour
While there are no bridges connecting Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, several methods exist to cross the water:
- Star Ferry: This is a popular way to see the skyline. Passengers can buy trip tokens at vending machines or pay with exact change at turnstiles.
- Road Tunnels: There are three MTR railway tunnels (Tsuen Wan, Tung Chung/Airport Express, and East Rail) and several road-only tunnels (Cross-Harbour Tunnel and Western Harbour Crossing). One tunnel serves both road traffic and the Tseung Kwan O line.
