Getting Around Chiquimula
Chiquimula is the capital of the department of Chiquimula and the most populous city in eastern Guatemala, known locally as "La perla del oriente" (the pearl of the east). It also functions as the main transport hub for the surrounding region, which makes it a practical base for exploring eastern Guatemala and a natural stopover for travellers crossing to or from Honduras.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Chiquimula has no rail, metro or tram network. There is no train, subway or light-rail service in the city, and none is described in the available information. Visitors should plan on road-based transport only.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Buses are the backbone of travel in and around Chiquimula. Two broad categories of service exist, and understanding the difference will help you choose the right one.
- Pullman buses: Interregional pullman services connect Chiquimula with Guatemala City and other destinations in eastern Guatemala, including Zacapa, Izabal and the Caribbean ports of Puerto Barrios and Santo Tomás de Castilla. Litegua (Líneas Terrestres Guatemaltecas) is the leading pullman operator on this corridor. Pullman buses offer reclining seats, air conditioning, formal terminals and numbered tickets — a very different experience from the repainted ex-school buses known as "camionetas."
- Chicken buses (camionetas): These are the repainted ex-school buses that serve local and regional routes. They are the cheaper, more informal option and are the usual way to cover short hops.
- Minibuses from the border: If you are arriving from Honduras via the El Florido / Copán Ruinas border crossing, you can reach Chiquimula by minibus for around Q20.
- Long-distance connections: The bus company Maria Elena runs a daily direct bus to Flores, departing at 9:30am and passing through Río Hondo, Río Dulce and Poptún. The trip is about 8 hours (despite what you may be told) and costs around Q85. Look for their office near the main bus stand in the market.
Buying Tickets and Booking Ahead
For pullman services, you can book online, by phone, or in person at the terminals. Litegua's booking system allows seat selection and payment by card or at a terminal. If you prefer to buy in person, arrive 30–45 minutes early. Fares are published as a single price band per class, so the same fare applies whether you are making a short hop or a long journey.
Advance booking is strongly advised at busy times:
- Holy Week: book 2–3 weeks ahead.
- The 15 December to 8 January holiday period: book 3–4 weeks ahead.
- National holidays such as 15 September, 12 October and 1 November: book about a week ahead.
Practical tips for pullman travel: arrive 30 minutes before departure, as buses leave on time; bring a light jacket because the air conditioning is strong; two large suitcases are included, with overweight luggage charged extra; expect 15–20 minute technical stops at Río Hondo for restrooms and food; and keep your ticket for inspectors.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and ride-hailing services such as Uber are available and are the most convenient way to cover specific point-to-point trips, particularly when you are carrying luggage or heading to a bus agency. In Guatemala City, for example, the standard way to reach a named Litegua agency from La Aurora airport is by taxi or Uber. The same approach applies in Chiquimula for getting to and from bus stands and terminals.
Walking
Chiquimula is a compact city, and its central area — including the market and main bus stand — is navigable on foot. Walking is a reasonable way to reach nearby shops, eateries and transport points if you are staying centrally. For longer trips across the city or to outlying terminals, use a taxi or a local bus instead.
Getting There from the Airport
Guatemala's main international gateway is La Aurora airport (GUA) in Guatemala City. Chiquimula lies roughly 174 km from the capital, so the airport is not in Chiquimula itself — you will need to travel onward by road.
- Step 1 — Airport to a bus agency: From La Aurora airport, take a taxi or Uber to one of the Litegua agencies in Guatemala City. Litegua's capital agencies include Km 9.5 Ruta al Atlántico (zona 17), Centra Norte at Km 8.5 (zona 17), and 15 Calle 10-40, zona 1. There is also a ticket office at 7a Avenida 7-24, zona 9 (IRTRA head offices).
- Step 2 — Capital to Chiquimula: Board a Litegua pullman bus heading east. Chiquimula is a listed destination, with El Rancho serving as the key junction to Chiquimula. Note that the booking system does not indicate which departure uses which agency, so confirm your departure point when you book.
- Alternative — via the Honduran border: If you are coming from Copán Ruinas or elsewhere in Honduras, cross at El Florido and take a minibus to Chiquimula for around Q20.
If your ultimate destination is Antigua or Lake Atitlán rather than Chiquimula, note that these require returning to the capital and taking a separate shuttle — Litegua does not serve those areas.
