Getting Around Takoradi
Takoradi is one half of the twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi, the capital of Ghana's Western Region and the region's largest urban centre. For a visitor, the good news is that the city sits on a solid road network and is well connected both to the rest of Ghana and to neighbouring countries. Getting around is mostly a matter of choosing between shared minibuses, taxis, and your own two feet, with a modest commuter rail service linking the two halves of the city.
By Trotro and Other Shared Transport
The workhorse of everyday movement in Takoradi is the trotro — a shared minibus running on set routes. This is the cheapest and most common way locals get about, and it is perfectly usable for visitors who are comfortable with a bit of hustle.
- Trotros operate on fixed routes, so you generally pick one up at a recognised stopping point and pay the mate (the conductor) once you are aboard.
- Because routes are set, you may need to change vehicles to reach your final destination; ask around at the stop and someone will point you to the right one.
- Public transport connections radiate out from Takoradi to major cities including Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Tema, Tamale, Sunyani, Ho, Wa, Bolgatanga, Techiman, Mim, Elubo and Aflao, so the same network that moves you around town also gets you out of it.
By Train
Ghana's rail network reaches Takoradi, and the city lies on the main railway lines toward Kumasi. For the visitor, the practical service is the commuter train.
- Commuter trains run several times a day between Sekondi and Takoradi, calling at stations in between — a straightforward way to move between the two halves of the twin city.
- The Takoradi railway station is the obvious starting point for rail travel; the city also has a local railway museum worth a look if you are interested in the colonial-era rail heritage.
- Do not expect a dense urban metro or tram system. Takoradi has no metro or tram network — rail here means the national and commuter lines, not a city subway.
By Taxi and Ride-Hailing
Taxis fill the gaps that trotros leave, and they are the easiest option when you are carrying luggage or heading somewhere off the main routes.
- You can hail a drop or chartered taxi to take you straight to a specific destination, rather than following a shared route.
- Taxis are widely available, and for visitors unfamiliar with the trotro routes they are often the simplest way to get oriented on a first day.
- Agree the fare before you set off, as is standard practice for chartered taxis.
By Car
If you would rather drive yourself or be driven, car rental is readily available in Takoradi.
- Rental rates vary with the type of vehicle, your location, whether you require a driver, and the rental company.
- Booking through major international platforms tends to come with a higher baseline price than arranging a car locally.
- Given the city's good road network and its position on routes to the wider region, a car is a reasonable choice if you plan to explore beyond the city centre.
Walking
Takoradi is a coastal city with a functioning road network, and walking is a realistic way to cover short distances within a neighbourhood — around the market area, for instance, or between nearby pubs, restaurants and clubs, since the city has a lively nightlife scene. For longer cross-city trips, though, most visitors will find trotros or taxis more practical, particularly in the heat, which stays hot year-round. Note that the city is prone to flooding, especially around the Anankwari, Kansawura and Whin rivers during heavy rain, so avoid low-lying routes after downpours.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Takoradi Airport (TDI) sits at Airport Ridge, along the Agona Nkwanta/Axim Road, and is the city's air link to the rest of Ghana and to international destinations.
- Flights from Accra to Takoradi take roughly 40 to 50 minutes, making air the fastest option for the Accra–Takoradi trip.
- Airlines enforce standard domestic luggage limits, so pack accordingly if you are flying in.
- On arrival, taxis are the natural way into the city; the airport is close to Sekondi, so the transfer is short.
Arriving by Road or Sea
Many visitors reach Takoradi overland rather than by air. Driving from Accra to Takoradi usually takes around 4 to 5 hours. Private long-distance coach operators such as VIP Jeoun frequently serve this highway route, with executive and standard classes available at different price points. The city's port is also a vital transport hub, with shipping lines providing regular services to other West African countries and Europe — though this is primarily a freight and regional sea connection rather than a visitor ferry service.
Practical Tips
- Carry small cash for trotro fares and taxis; you pay as you go rather than buying a pass.
- There is no metro, tram or city rail pass to worry about — the ticketing you will encounter is simply paying the fare on the vehicle.
- For longer journeys out of the city, book with a coach operator or arrange a rental car in advance.
- If you are unsure which trotro or taxi to take, ask at your hotel or at the nearest stop; locals are used to directing visitors.
