Getting Around Sekondi-Takoradi

Understanding the Twin City

Sekondi-Takoradi is really two cities in one: Takoradi, the commercial and port-facing half with the airport, Market Circle and most hotels, and Sekondi, the older administrative and rail-side town. Kojokrom sits between them along the rail corridor. This matters practically: if you ask for "the station" or "the bus terminal" without saying which half of the city you mean, you can easily be sent to the wrong place. When giving directions to a driver, name the specific destination — a hotel, the port gate, Market Circle, or "Sekondi side" — rather than a generic landmark.

Getting Around the City

Almost all local movement in Sekondi-Takoradi happens by road. The city has a good road network, and visitors typically choose between taxis, ride-hailing apps, and trotros (shared minibuses) depending on budget and how much luggage they are carrying. There is no single central bus terminal, so departure points depend on the operator and the destination — Market Circle is the main orientation point in central Takoradi, but it is not a guaranteed loading point for every intercity vehicle.

Rail

Commuter trains run several times a day between Sekondi and Takoradi, calling at stations in between, including Kojokrom, Ketan, Adiembra, Essaman and Butuah. Takoradi Railway Station sits on Papa Gyaesayor Avenue in the Chapel Hill area of Takoradi, Sekondi Railway Station serves the Sekondi side, and Kojokrom Station lies between them. Passenger service on this corridor was relaunched after a period of inactivity, so the line is genuinely useful for moving along the Sekondi–Kojokrom–Takoradi axis when it is running.

What the rail network is not is a way into the city from elsewhere. There is no active long-distance passenger railway linking Sekondi-Takoradi to Accra, Kumasi, Tarkwa or Cape Coast, and the wider regional network is underdeveloped and largely cargo-only. If you are arriving from another part of Ghana, plan on road or air for the final leg. Schedules and fares on the commuter line are indicative and can change, so confirm current times and prices at the station before you travel.

Buses, Trotros and Shared Taxis

Road transport carries the overwhelming majority of passengers in Ghana, and Sekondi-Takoradi is no exception. For intercity travel, private long-distance coach operators such as VIP Jeoun and STC-style services connect Takoradi with major cities including Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Tema, Tamale, Sunyani, Ho, Wa, Bolgatanga, Elubo, Aflao, Mim and Techiman. The Accra route is the most popular, running along the coast, and tickets on busy routes — especially at weekends and around holidays — are best bought in advance at the carrier's ticket office.

Within the city, trotros operate on set routes and are the cheapest way to get around, though they can be crowded and are not ideal for a first transfer from the airport with luggage. Shared taxis are another option; if you take one, confirm before boarding whether the fare is per seat or for the whole car. Carry small Ghanaian cedi notes for trotros, shared taxis and short rides, and confirm your destination and the final stop with the driver before you set off.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are the most convenient option for most visitors. Street-hailed taxis are widely available, but you should agree the fare before entering the vehicle. Ride-hailing apps such as Bolt, Uber and, where available, Yango also operate, and app supply tends to be stronger in central Takoradi than in outlying beach areas, around the port, or on the Sekondi side. When using an app, check the pickup pin and the vehicle plate carefully.

Hotels often provide their own cars; if you use one, confirm whether waiting time, parking, airport pickup and port access are included in the price. For anything connected to the Port of Takoradi or the oil-and-gas industry, a pre-arranged driver is a better bet than a random street taxi — port access is not a single public entrance and depends on security clearance, company contacts and which terminal or office you need. Confirm the exact gate or office, identification requirements, pickup time and waiting area in advance.

Walking

Walking is realistic for short hops within a neighbourhood — around Market Circle, for instance, which is the centre of city life and a good place to buy souvenirs and fabrics. For longer cross-city trips, or when carrying luggage, plan on a vehicle instead. The climate is hot and tropical year-round, so light, loose natural-fabric clothing, walking shoes, a hat and sunglasses are sensible, with a raincoat or umbrella during the wet season. Avoid walking alone on unlit beach areas after dark.

Arriving at Takoradi Airport

Takoradi Airport (TKD) is the main air gateway to Ghana's Western Region and sits close to the urban area on Airport Road, at Airport Ridge along the Agona Nkwanta/Axim Road. Domestic flights from Accra take roughly 40 to 50 minutes, and standard domestic luggage limits apply. International travellers usually fly into Accra first — which receives flights from Europe, the Middle East and beyond — and then connect by domestic flight; Kumasi and Abidjan are alternative entry points for more complex West African routings.

The transfer from the airport into the city is short, so the main risk is not distance but destination precision. The port gate, an office, a hotel, Market Circle and Sekondi all route differently, so have the exact address ready. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the straightforward options; a trotro is cheaper but not well suited to a first arrival with bags. If you are heading onward to coastal spots such as Busua or Axim, or further west, arrange door-to-door transport in advance rather than improvising at the airport.
