Getting around Sekondi
Sekondi is the older half of the twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi, and it sits within a well-connected coastal metropolitan area with a good road network. In practice, visitors get around by shared minibus, by taxi, or on foot, with a commuter rail line linking Sekondi and Takoradi. The guidance below covers each option in turn, plus how to reach the city from its airport.
Rail
Sekondi-Takoradi lies on Ghana's main railway lines toward Kumasi, and the historic rail link is part of what made the twin city an economic hub. For everyday movement, the most useful service is the commuter train, which runs several times a day between Sekondi and Takoradi and the stations in between. If you are staying in one half of the city and want to visit the other, the train is a straightforward option rather than a long road trip. Takoradi railway station is the main rail point in the city.
Note that this is a conventional commuter rail service, not a metro or tram network — there is no metro or tram system in Sekondi-Takoradi. The city's rail heritage is also visible to visitors: the local railway museum is one of the notable colonial-era structures in the area.
Buses and shared transport
Public transport within the city is dominated by trotros — shared minibuses that operate on set routes. They are the standard way locals move around, and for a visitor they are the cheapest and most frequent option, though you will need to ask which route serves your destination and where to pick it up. Fares are typically paid in cash to the mate on board; there is no citywide ticket or travel pass system to buy in advance.
For longer journeys, Sekondi-Takoradi has public transport connections to major cities including Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Tema, Tamale, Sunyani, Ho, Wa, Bolgatanga, Techiman, Mim, Elubo and Aflao. Private long-distance coach operators such as VIP Jeoun run the highway route to Accra, with executive and standard classes available at different price points. Road travel from Accra to Takoradi usually takes around four to five hours.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis are widely used and come in two practical forms: shared taxis running along common routes, and drop or chartered taxis that take you directly to your specific destination. If you want door-to-door convenience, hail a taxi or arrange a charter. Agree on the fare before you set off, as chartered taxis are negotiated rather than metered.
Car rental is also readily available in Takoradi if you prefer to drive yourself or hire a car with a driver. Rates vary with the vehicle type, your location, whether you need a driver, and the rental company, so it is worth comparing a few operators or booking through a major international platform before you arrive.
Walking
Sekondi and Takoradi are separate towns that merged into one city, so the distances between the two centres are not really walkable for most visitors — you will generally use the commuter train, a trotro or a taxi to move between them. Within a single neighbourhood, however, walking is a reasonable way to reach markets, restaurants and nearby landmarks, and the city has a lively nightlife scene of pubs, restaurants and clubs spread across it. Be mindful of the climate: the city is hot year-round, and the wet season brings heavy rain, with flooding a known risk in parts of the metro because of its proximity to the Anankwari, Kansawura and Whin rivers. Plan walks around the cooler parts of the day and be ready to switch to a taxi when it rains.
Getting from the airport into the city
Takoradi Airport (TDI) sits at Airport Ridge along the Agona Nkwanta/Axim Road, about 5 km from Sekondi, which makes it the natural arrival point for the city. Flights from Accra take roughly 40 to 50 minutes, and standard domestic luggage limits apply. Flying is the fastest and preferred choice for many travellers wanting a quick, comfortable trip on regional aircraft.
From the airport, the practical options mirror the rest of the city: take a taxi or chartered drop taxi straight to your accommodation, or use a trotro if you are comfortable with shared transport and know which route heads your way. Because the airport is close to Sekondi, the transfer into town is short. If you would rather not fly, the alternative is the road route from Accra by long-distance coach, which takes around four to five hours.
Practical tips
- Carry cash for trotros and taxis — there is no unified city transit pass to buy.
- Agree taxi fares before departure, especially for chartered trips.
- Use the commuter train for the Sekondi–Takoradi run and stations in between.
- For intercity travel, book with established coach operators such as VIP Jeoun.
- Check the weather: the wet season can bring flooding near the city's rivers.
