Getting Around Ho

Getting Around Ho

Ho is a compact Ghanaian city where getting around is straightforward once you know the local options. The practical backbone of visitor transport here is the shared taxi and the tro-tro (the local minibus), supplemented by walking for shorter hops. There is no metro, tram, or light-rail system to navigate, and no urban rail network serving the city, so you can plan your movements around road-based transport.

Taxis

Taxis are the simplest way to get around, and you can pick one up from essentially anywhere in the city. Fares are standardised and inexpensive, so you generally don't need to negotiate a special rate for a normal in-town trip.

Tro-tros and Other Shared Transport

Tro-tros are the main shared public transport in Ho and are useful both for moving around and for leaving the city. The main departure point is The Station, located directly south of the market.

Walking

Walking works well for short trips, particularly around the market area and The Station, which sit close together. Because taxis are easy to flag and fares are low, many visitors combine walking for nearby stops with a taxi for longer or later journeys. Do keep your bearings and note landmarks as you go, since this is also what you'll rely on when directing a taxi driver.

Getting In from the Airport

Ho is served by Ho Airport. For practical purposes, onward travel into the city is by road, using the same taxi and tro-tro options that serve the rest of Ho. If you're arriving overland instead, the well-established route is the air-conditioned tro-tro from Kinbu Gardens in Accra, which reaches Ho in about three hours.
