Getting Around Ashaiman

Ashaiman is a large town and the capital of the Ashaiman Municipal District in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, sitting close to Tema and within reach of Accra. For a visitor, the practical reality is that Ashaiman is served by road-based transport: buses, taxis and shared vehicles. There is no metro or tram network to rely on, and the town's own rail provision is not something a visitor can count on for day-to-day movement. Plan your trips around the roads, and you will find the town manageable.

Buses and Public Transport

Buses are the mainstay of public transport in and around Ashaiman. The town has a bus station that acts as a starting point for services toward Accra and other destinations, and bus routes connect Ashaiman with the wider Accra–Tema corridor.

Fares are typically paid on board or at the station rather than through an advance pass system, and schedules can shift with traffic and time of day. A journey-planning app such as Moovit is useful for checking real-time departures and arrival times, and for working out where to change buses.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are widely available and are the quickest option if you want to travel directly rather than along a bus route. A taxi from Ashaiman to Accra takes roughly half an hour in normal conditions, considerably faster than the bus, though at a higher cost. Taxi operators serving the route can be booked in advance; one example is The Supreme Taxi. If you prefer to drive yourself, the same trip by car is the cheapest option of all, but you will need to be comfortable with local road conditions and traffic.

For shorter hops within Ashaiman, expect to negotiate a fare with the driver before setting off, or use a ride-hailing app where coverage allows.

Walking

Ashaiman is a compact, densely built town, and walking is a realistic way to cover short distances between nearby destinations, markets and transport stops. The town's tropical savanna climate means it is hot year-round, with a wet season from around April to June and a drier stretch from September to November, so carry water and plan longer walks for the cooler parts of the day. For anything beyond a short stroll, a bus or taxi will usually be more comfortable.

Getting from the Airport into Ashaiman

Most visitors arrive through Accra, and the practical approach is to reach Accra first and then continue to Ashaiman by road. The direct bus 998 from Ashaiman to Accra, and its counterpart in the other direction, links the two, as do taxis and private cars. Because Ashaiman sits in the Tema area while Accra lies to the west, allow for the transfer between the two, and build in extra time if you are arriving during busy traffic hours.
