Getting around Enfield Town

Enfield Town is the historic market centre of the London Borough of Enfield, in north London. Its compact town centre, with the marketplace, the parish church of St Andrew and the shopping area clustered together, makes it easy to explore on foot, while the town's position within Greater London means it is well served by the capital's public transport network.

Walking in the town centre

For most visitors, walking is the simplest way to get around Enfield Town itself. The market place, the church, the shopping centre and the Civic Centre — the headquarters of the borough administration — all sit close together. A public footpath also follows the New River Loop, the ornamental stretch of the New River that encircles the town centre, for most of its length, ending at Town Park. This makes a pleasant walking route through the heart of the town.

Rail

Enfield Town railway station serves the town centre and is operated as part of the London Overground network. Trains run from Enfield Town to London Liverpool Street, giving visitors a direct rail link into central London. Services are not especially frequent, so it is worth checking times before you travel.

Buses

Enfield Town bus station sits immediately next to Enfield Town railway station and the shopping area, and acts as the local bus interchange for the town centre. It is part of the London Buses network, owned and operated by Transport for London, and connects the town centre with surrounding parts of Enfield and other areas of north London, as well as with the railway station.

For travel between Enfield Town and central London, a night bus service also runs directly from the town to the West End, departing from Genotin Road and arriving at St Martin's Place. It runs daily and is generally the cheapest option compared with the train, a taxi or driving.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis and minicabs are available in Enfield Town and offer a door-to-door alternative to public transport, including for the journey into central London. Local minicab operators serve the area. A taxi into central London is considerably more expensive than the bus or train, so it is best suited to short trips, late-night travel or when carrying luggage.

Getting there from the airport

Enfield Town has no airport of its own; visitors arriving by air will land at one of London's airports and continue into the city by public transport or taxi. The town's rail link to London Liverpool Street and its bus interchange at Enfield Town station are the key connections for the onward journey: from central London termini you can reach Enfield Town by Overground train or by bus. Because Enfield sits within the London fare zones, Oyster and contactless payment cards work across the buses and can be used for the rail journey as well.
