Getting Around Doncaster
Doncaster is a city in South Yorkshire with a compact centre well served by public transport. Visitors have several practical options for moving around the city, from walking the centre to using buses, trains, and taxis.
Arriving by Air
The nearest airports to Doncaster are Leeds-Bradford and Manchester. Doncaster Sheffield Airport closed in 2022, so these are now your main air entry points. From either airport, you can travel to Doncaster by train or coach.
Arriving by Train
Doncaster has good rail connections to major UK cities. Trains run frequently from London King's Cross, taking 90 minutes to 2 hours. Direct services also arrive from York, Newcastle upon Tyne, and Edinburgh. Cross-country trains connect from Bristol and Birmingham, while Transpennine services run from Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly. Frequent local trains serve nearby cities including Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds, and Hull.
Doncaster station is conveniently located within Frenchgate Interchange, next to the bus station and across the road from the shopping centre, making onward connections straightforward.
Arriving by Coach
National Express operates long-distance coach services to Doncaster, taking approximately 4 hours 30 minutes from London Victoria. Some services continue to other destinations: the afternoon NX567 runs to Hull, Bridlington, and Scarborough, while the overnight NX436 goes to York, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, and South Shields. Service NX327 arrives once daily from Birmingham via Leicester and Nottingham, continuing to Scunthorpe and Hull.
The bus station is located within Frenchgate Interchange, separated from the railway station by a service alley.
Arriving by Car
The A1(M) bypasses the town to the west, though it can become congested as it is only two lanes. The M18 motorway passes to the south, connecting Lincolnshire to the M1 near Sheffield, and usually flows more freely with three lanes.
If driving, several Park & Ride facilities offer convenient alternatives to parking in the city centre:
- White Rose Way (off junction 3 of the M18) with Bus 70 to the town centre
- Doncaster South / Parrots Corner on the A638 with Bus 55
- Doncaster North / Woodlands on the A638 with Bus 50
- Doncaster Racecourse, served by multiple buses
The main car park within the town centre is located in the Frenchgate Centre.
Buses and Local Transport
Buses are a primary way to move around Doncaster and the surrounding area. First Bus operates the frequent X78 service every 15 minutes from Sheffield via Meadowhall, Rotherham, and Conisbrough to Doncaster. Bus X19 connects Doncaster and Barnsley in 45 minutes, running every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday and hourly on Sundays.
Local buses serve nearby towns: Bus 496 runs to Wakefield, buses 408 and 409 go to Pontefract, and Bus 98 runs to Gainsborough. Buses also reach attractions around the city: Bus 41 towards Scawby serves Cusworth Hall (every 20 minutes), Bus X78 towards Sheffield passes Conisbrough Castle, Bus 203 serves Brodsworth Hall and Hooton Pagnell (Monday to Saturday, every 2 hours), and buses 57 and 58 go to the Wildlife Park via Branton.
