Getting Around Colchester
Colchester is a compact and walkable city, making it easy for visitors to explore on foot. The city centre is largely pedestrianised and much of the historic core is encircled by High Street, Queen Street, Osbourne Street, St Johns Street and Head Street. Castle Park in the north-eastern city centre offers a pleasant traffic-free area to wander. For attractions further afield, you have several transport options available.
Walking
The city centre is easily walkable, and most visitor attractions are within reasonable walking distance. The pedestrianised zones make exploring the core of the city straightforward and pleasant.
Buses and Coach Services
Colchester's bus network is served by two main operators: First Essex and Network Colchester. Secondary operators including Konectbuses and Beestons provide services from surrounding areas. Most local bus services run from a temporary bus station on Queen Street, though you can board at other stops around the city centre.
Local buses can be useful for reaching attractions outside the immediate city centre, such as Wivenhoe, the University of Essex, Highwoods Country Park, and Colchester Zoo. Most routes run at 10–30 minute intervals between 5am and 6pm, with less frequent evening services up to 11pm. Single tickets start at around £1.50, with returns at approximately £2.50. A £3 day rover ticket offers unlimited journeys for one day and is worthwhile if you plan multiple trips.
Note that buses follow a one-way system through the city centre, so your boarding point for the return journey may differ from where you alighted. Check the schedule at the bus information centre on Queen Street to confirm the correct stop.

National Express operates coach services connecting Colchester to London Victoria, Clacton-on-Sea, and other major UK cities. Airlink X20 provides a bus service from Colchester to Braintree and Stansted Airport.
Railway Network
Colchester is served by five railway stations. All services are operated by Greater Anglia and run on two main lines: the Great Eastern Main Line (serving London Liverpool Street, Ipswich and Norwich) and the Sunshine Coast Line (serving Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze).
Colchester Station (North Station) is the main rail hub, located about a mile north of the city centre. It has approximately five services per hour to London Liverpool Street, taking around 50 minutes to 1 hour. Half-hourly express services between London and Norwich make the journey in about 50 minutes with one or two intermediate stops. Services also run to Norwich, Lowestoft, Ipswich, Harwich, Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze. The north entrance has a staffed ticket office, self-service machines, ATMs, a taxi rank and long-stay parking. The south entrance is smaller with bicycle parking and self-service ticketing but no staffed booths. Buses 61 and 62 run from outside the north exit directly to Colchester High Street.
Colchester Town Station, located at St. Botolphs road junction in the south-east of the city centre, has a half-hourly shuttle to Colchester North and hourly services to Walton-on-the-Naze. Off-peak direct services to London are also available.
Hythe Station is a small, unstaffed station in the eastern suburb near the University of Essex, with hourly services to Walton and rush-hour services to London and Clacton. Note that this station can feel isolated after dark.
Wivenhoe Station serves the riverside town of Wivenhoe and University of Essex, with hourly services to London and Clacton, plus local services to Walton.
Marks Tey Station is located in the western village and suburb of Marks Tey and serves as an interchange for services to Sudbury, with regular connections from Colchester and London.
Bus Rapid Transit
A bus rapid transit system is under development in Colchester. It will serve the central city and its suburbs with one route and eight stations, terminating in a proposed new garden community. The guided busway portions are planned along Cowdray Avenue and Via Urbis Romanae. Construction is set to finish in 2025.
Taxis
Metered taxis can be picked up from taxi ranks on High Street or outside North Station (north exit), though they can be difficult to find. Calling a minicab is often cheaper and more convenient. Towncar Minicabs is a useful operator and can be reached at +44 1206 515515.
Cycling
Colchester is an attractive place to cycle. Two National Cycle Routes pass through the city, including National Cycle Route 1. Cycling in the city centre can be challenging due to heavy traffic and narrow roads with few dedicated cycle lanes, but once you move away from the centre, there are plenty of cycle paths away from main roads. These routes pass many of Colchester's sights including the Roman Circus site, Gosbecks Archaeological Park and Abbey Fields. Some bike stores may rent bicycles, though note that many National Cycle Routes run off-road and may not be suitable for road bikes.
Getting to Colchester from the Airport
The nearest major airport to Colchester is Stansted Airport. Airlink X20 operates a bus service from Colchester to Stansted, and National Express route 250 connects Ipswich, Stansted and Heathrow Airports with Colchester every two hours round-the-clock.
Driving and Parking
Colchester can be reached by car via the A12 (linking to the M25 from the south), the A14 (linking to the M1/M6 from the north) or the A120 (connecting to the M11). Traffic can be heavy during rush hours. Street parking in the city centre is prohibited or limited to short stays, so you will need to use a public car park. Digital roadside displays indicate parking availability in each building. Surface car parks such as Vineyard Street or the Britannia Building are typically the cheapest option, while council multi-storey car parks are moderately priced and open 24 hours. Most car parks issue a ticket on entry, with payment required at a machine before exit.
