Getting Around Rouen
Rouen's city centre is compact and walkable, with all major sights accessible on foot. However, the city offers several public transport options for those who prefer not to walk or need to travel to outlying areas.
Walking
The historic centre is easily navigable by foot, making walking the most straightforward way to explore the city's main attractions.
Public Transport Network
Public transport in Rouen is operated by two agencies. TCAR (the Rouen public transport agency, a subsidiary of Veolia Transport) manages local services, while Veolia Transport Normandie Interurbain (VTNI) provides intercity bus connections.
Tram (Métro)
Rouen's tram system, commonly called the "Métro du Rouen" by locals, operates from north to south. The network runs partially underground through the city centre and on surface or reserved track elsewhere. The line runs from Boulingrin in the north to Saint-Sever, where it branches into two southern lines—one to Technopôle and one to Georges Braque. You can purchase tickets at tram stations including Gare-Rue Verte on Place Bernard-Tissot and Théâtre des Arts on rue Jeanne d'Arc.
TEOR (Bus Rapid Transit)
TEOR is a dedicated bus rapid transit system with three lines (T1, T2, and T3) operating north of the river. Tickets can be purchased from automatic ticket machines at TEOR stations.
Buses
A standard bus network operates throughout the city with multiple lines serving various neighbourhoods. You can buy tickets from bus conductors (though not on TEOR vehicles) or from ticket machines.
Buying Tickets
Public transport tickets are available from multiple sources: tram and TEOR stations have automatic machines, tickets can be purchased from bus conductors, and single tickets can be bought by text message for €1.60, valid for one hour. Notably, all public transport is free on Saturdays.
Cycling
Rouen has a bicycle-sharing system called Cy'clic. Additionally, Velo-R, located north of the Seine on Avenue Jeanne d'Arc near the metro station, rents bikes for €1–2 per day and operates an official drop-off rental scheme allowing you to return bikes at different locations from where you picked them up.
Scooter Rentals
A scooter shop on Avenue de Bretagne (number 18) offers rentals, though advance reservation is required. Avis car rental is also available in town.
Taxis
Taxis operate in Rouen. Options include Taxi Rouen Farnes and Taxi Rouen T.A Transport (3 rue de la pie), which operates from 09:00 to 20:00.
Getting to Rouen from the Airport
Rouen Airport (Aéroport de Rouen - Vallée de Seine) is a small facility with limited connections. For most visitors, particularly those arriving from Paris, alternative airports may be more practical. However, Flixbus coach services connect Rouen directly with Paris and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, offering a coach-based transport option for airport transfers.
Arriving by Train
Rouen-Rive-Droite station, located on Rue Verte in the north of the city, is the main rail hub. The station handles both intercity and local services. Several trains depart daily from Paris St-Lazare Station, with journey times around one hour and fifteen minutes. Note that platform numbers are typically posted only 15–20 minutes before departure, so arrive early but do not be concerned if platforms are not yet displayed. Remember to validate (composter) your ticket in one of the yellow machines before boarding.
