Getting Around La Laguna

La Laguna sits right alongside Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and together the two cities form a single continuous urban area. That closeness shapes how you move around: the historic centre is compact and made for walking, while the tram, buses and taxis handle the links to Santa Cruz, the airport and the rest of the island.

On Foot in the Historic Centre

The old town is the heart of any visit, and it is completely pedestrianised and easy to walk around. Several streets of historical significance have been closed off to automobile traffic, so you can wander between the Cathedral, the Plaza del Adelantado and the surrounding colonial streets without worrying about cars. If you are basing yourself in or near the centre, most of the main sights are within comfortable walking distance of each other.

Tram

The MetroTenerife tram system connects Santa Cruz with La Laguna. Look for the distinctive tram symbols on the network, and note that the line terminates at Trinidad, right at the southern edge of the historic centre. Trams run frequently, roughly every ten minutes, and the trip between the two cities takes about twenty minutes. This is the simplest way to hop between La Laguna and Santa Cruz if you are staying in either.

Buses

Titsa buses serve both as the island-wide network and as the local bus service, so the same system covers short hops around town and longer journeys across Tenerife. Most buses stop at the La Laguna Intercambiador (bus station), which is about a ten-minute walk from the centre. Inside, the Titsa Information Centre has bus schedules and route maps, and it also sells ten+ cards — a useful option if you plan to use the bus repeatedly.

Fares are paid directly to the driver on many services, so having small change or a card ready makes boarding quicker.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are a straightforward fallback for short trips, late nights, or reaching the bus station and tram stops with luggage. Because the historic centre is closed to motor traffic, a taxi will drop you at the edge of the pedestrian zone rather than at your exact address, so be prepared for a short walk at the end of the ride.

Driving and Parking

If you arrive by car, the TF-5 motorway links La Laguna with Santa Cruz to the east and with Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava to the west. From the south of the island, TF-1 connects with the shorter TF-2, from which you can pick up the TF-5. Be aware that the historic city is closed to motor traffic, so drivers must park on the outskirts. There is a large public car park, Las Quinteras, on the eastern edge of the old city, with another car park just a short distance north. Spaces can be very scarce, so be prepared to circle the lot a few times before finding one.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Tenerife Norte (Los Rodeos, TFN) is right next door to La Laguna, which makes the transfer quick and cheap. Bus lines 102, 107 and 108 run from the airport to the central bus exchange (the intercambiador), which is a single stop away. Departures are roughly every half-hour, and a one-way ticket costs €2.45, payable directly to the bus driver.

Tenerife Sur (Reina Sofia, TFS) is far to the south-west, but it has good bus connections to the city if you are arriving on a flight that lands there.
