Getting your bearings
Tetuán de las Victorias is a neighbourhood in northern Madrid, strung along Calle de Bravo Murillo, and it is well connected to the rest of the city by public transport. The area is served by Madrid Metro lines 1, 6 and 10, along with numerous bus lines, so most trips into the centre or across the city can be made without a car. The district has its own character, with North African influence and Moroccan-Spanish fusion food, and sights such as Plaza de la Remonta and Parque de la Ventilla.
Metro, rail and tram
The Metro is the backbone of getting around here. Lines 1, 6 and 10 all serve the district, which makes it easy to reach central Madrid and to connect onward to other parts of the network. A single metro or bus ride costs roughly €1.50–2.00, so for a day of sightseeing it is worth asking at a station about multi-trip or tourist travel passes, which usually work out cheaper than buying singles each time. Tickets and passes are bought at metro stations and from bus drivers.
Buses and bikes
Numerous bus lines run through the district alongside the metro, giving you a surface-level alternative and filling in gaps between stations. Buses are a good way to see the neighbourhood as you travel, and the same single-fare pricing applies.
BiciMAD, Madrid's public bike-rental scheme, is available, but bear in mind that the area can be hilly, so cycling may suit some visitors better than others.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis are a straightforward option for short hops or late nights, particularly when the metro is not running or you are carrying luggage. Ride-hailing apps also operate in Madrid. For practical purposes, taxis and app-based cars are best used for point-to-point trips rather than as your main way of exploring, since the metro and buses cover the district well.
Walking
Walking is a pleasant way to explore the neighbourhood itself, especially along Calle de Bravo Murillo and around Plaza de la Remonta and Parque de la Ventilla. Do keep in mind that parts of the area are hilly. As in any busy city area, watch out for pickpocketing in crowded markets and on public transport, and keep bags zipped and close.
From the airport into the city
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) is about 12 km from Tetuán de las Victorias, making it one of the closer districts to the airport. From the airport you can reach the city by metro, by suburban rail (Cercanías), by airport bus, or by taxi and ride-hailing; once in the city, connect onto Metro lines 1, 6 or 10 to reach Tetuán. Taxis are the simplest option if you have heavy luggage, while the metro and rail are the cheaper choices.
Practical tips
- Buy metro and bus tickets at stations or from the driver; a single ride costs about €1.50–2.00, and passes can save money if you plan to travel a lot.
- Mealtimes run late: lunch is typically 2–4 PM and dinner 9–11 PM. Tipping 5–10% is appreciated but not mandatory.
- Stay alert for pickpockets in crowded markets and on public transport.
- Expect some hills if you plan to walk or cycle; the metro and buses are the easiest way to cover longer distances.
