Getting around Alcorcón

Alcorcón sits within the Madrid metropolitan area, and its transport network is built around that relationship: the city is stitched into Madrid's metro, suburban rail and bus systems, so a visitor can treat it as a base for the capital or simply as a place to explore on its own. The city itself is largely flat, which makes walking a realistic option in and around the centre, where the historic core is surrounded by modern development.

Rail, metro and light rail

Alcorcón is linked to Madrid by several rail-based modes, and these are usually the fastest way to move between the two.

Because these systems are part of the wider Madrid regional network, the practical approach for a visitor is to use the same tickets and travel passes that work across Madrid's metro, suburban rail and urban buses. If you plan to make several journeys, a multi-day or rechargeable regional travel card is generally the simplest option; single tickets can be bought at stations for one-off trips. As with any large network, check the route and direction before you travel, since metro, light rail and Cercanías are separate systems even where they connect.

Buses and other public transport

Buses fill in the gaps that rail does not cover, both inside Alcorcón and on routes to and from Madrid and neighbouring towns. A long list of interurban lines serves the city, including the 511, 512, 513, 514, 516, 518, 536, 541, 545, 546, 547, 548 and 551, plus night services N501, N502 and N504. The night buses are worth noting if you are returning late from Madrid.

Urban and suburban bus services in Alcorcón are operated by Arriva, part of the DB Deutsche Bahn Group. The city has made a point of running its inner-city transport entirely with electric buses, and the fleet includes battery-electric vehicles used both on the three inner-city lines and on some intercity routes leaving Alcorcón. In practice this means a quiet, modern bus network, but it does not change how you use it: pay on board or with your travel card, and expect the same ticketing conventions as the rest of the Madrid region.

The city has also invested in smart traffic management that gives priority to public transport at traffic lights, with a particular focus on intercity bus lines 511 and 513. For a visitor this translates into buses that keep moving through junctions rather than sitting in traffic, which makes them a more attractive option than they might otherwise be.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis are available in Alcorcón as in the rest of the Madrid region, and ride-hailing apps operate in the metropolitan area as well. These are most useful for trips that are awkward by rail or bus, for late-night journeys, or when you are carrying luggage. Because Alcorcón is part of the Madrid transport area, fares and availability follow the regional pattern rather than a separate local scheme.

Walking

Alcorcón is a largely flat municipality, which makes walking comfortable and practical. The historic centre retains the compact structure of a small rural settlement, and it is surrounded by modern neighbourhoods that grew up as the city expanded rapidly from the 1960s onwards. That layout means the centre is easy to cover on foot, with shops, the parish church of Santa María la Blanca and other sights within a walk of each other. For longer hops between the centre and outlying districts, the metro, light rail and buses are the sensible complement to walking.

Getting from the airport into the city

Madrid's airport is the natural arrival point for Alcorcón. The city is connected to Madrid by Metro Line 10, Line 12 and Metro Ligero Line 3, by Cercanías line C-5, and by the interurban bus network, so the journey from the airport is a matter of connecting into that Madrid-wide network and then travelling out to Alcorcón.

Whichever option you choose, allow time for the change in Madrid, and confirm the final connection to Alcorcón before you set out, as metro, light rail and Cercanías are distinct systems with their own lines and directions.
