Getting Around Sohag

Sohag is a city on the west bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt, and getting around it is fairly straightforward once you know what to expect. Central districts are compact enough to explore on foot, while longer hops are usually made by microbus, bus, or taxi. There is no metro or tram system in Sohag, so the city's public transport is road-based.

Walking

Sohag is moderately walkable in its central areas, where shops and cafes are reachable on foot. Outside the central districts, it is worth exercising caution, so plan to walk mainly in the busier, built-up parts of town and use a vehicle for anything farther out.

Cycling is possible but not ideal for everyday getting around. Bicycle lanes exist along the Nile, but vehicles encroach on them and traffic is chaotic, so cycling is rated poor for daily commuting and better suited to recreation.

Buses and Public Transport

Public transit in Sohag consists mainly of microbuses and buses. They are affordable, but often crowded and run on sporadic schedules, so allow extra time and be flexible with your plans. There is no metro system in the city.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are common in Sohag. Fares typically require negotiation, so agree on a price before you set off. For a visitor, this is usually the most practical way to cover longer distances within the city or to reach outlying sites.

Rail Connections

Sohag has a railway station, and the Cairo–Luxor train line stops here, which makes rail a useful option for intercity travel. Service is provided by Egyptian National Railways, though it can be rather erratic and frustrating, so build in some slack if you are connecting to other plans.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Sohag International Airport offers regional connections, including to the Gulf States and Cairo. It sits some distance from the city, and a taxi from the airport into Sohag should cost about 150 LE. As with taxis elsewhere in the city, it is sensible to confirm the fare before departing.
