Getting Around Béchar: An Overview
Béchar is the capital of Béchar Province in northwestern Algeria, sitting on the banks of the Oued Béchar at an elevation of around 747 metres, with the rocky highlands of Djebel Béchar rising to the southeast. It's a hot desert city with extremely hot summers and warm winters, and very little rain year-round — so plan your movement around the heat, especially in summer. The city has a modest tourism sector, with hotels and attractions including sand dunes, palm groves, the old ksar, and an ancient fort, and getting between these is generally straightforward.
Rail: SNTF Services
Béchar is served by Algeria's national rail company, SNTF. The line into the city is standard gauge, converted from narrow gauge in 2010. Historically, from 1941 to 1963, the city was reached by the standard gauge Mediterranean-Niger-Railway.
For visitors, the most useful service is the daily overnight passenger train from Oran, which takes just over 12 hours and arrives in Béchar in the early morning. This makes rail a practical option if you're coming from the north and don't mind travelling overnight. There is a railway station in the city where you'll arrive and depart.
Metro and Tram
Béchar has no metro or tram network. Rail (SNTF) is the only fixed-track public transport in the city, and it functions as intercity transport rather than a way to move around town.
Buses and Other Public Transport
The main structured public transport option is the SNTF rail service connecting Béchar with Oran and other points along the line.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
As with any destination where this information isn't documented, it's best to confirm locally on arrival what's available and agree on fares in advance.
Walkability
Given the hot desert climate — extremely hot summers and very little rain — walking is likely most comfortable in the cooler parts of the day, and you should plan for heat and sun exposure whenever you're on foot.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Béchar is served by Boudghene Ben Ali Lotfi Airport, located to the northwest of the city. The airport is the main point of arrival for visitors flying in, and from there you continue into the city centre.
Roads and Arriving by Car
The main road through Béchar is the N6 highway. It connects north to Mecheria, Saida, Mascara and Oran, and south to Adrar and Timiaouine. If you're driving in from Oran, the route is about 600 km on paved road, but speeds are limited, so allow generous time. Note that although Béchar lies close to Morocco, the border has been closed since 1994 due to political conflict, so you cannot cross into Morocco from here.
Within the commune there is a network of roads, and the town has several fuel service stations, which is useful if you're travelling by your own or a rented vehicle.
Practical Tips
- Book the SNTF overnight train from Oran if you want a direct, scheduled arrival in Béchar in the early morning.
- Expect heat: Béchar has a hot desert climate with extremely hot summers, so schedule movement and sightseeing for cooler hours.
- Don't plan on metro, tram, or a documented city bus network — rail is the main public transport option.
- Arrange your transfer from Boudghene Ben Ali Lotfi Airport into the city locally, since no fixed airport transfer service is documented.
- If driving, use the N6 for connections north to Oran and south to Adrar and Timiaouine, and refuel at the town's service stations.
- Don't attempt to cross into Morocco — the border has been closed since 1994.
