Getting Around Sidi Bel Abbès
Sidi Bel Abbès is the capital of its wilaya and the commercial centre of a surrounding agricultural region of vineyards, orchards, market gardens and grain fields. For a visitor, the city is compact enough that a mix of walking, the tramway and taxis will cover most needs, with the railway station as your link to the wider region.
Tramway
The city's light rail line, the Sidi Bel Abbès tramway, opened in July 2017 and is the most modern piece of public transport in town. It is the easiest way to move between the main points of interest without negotiating road traffic.
- The line covers most of the city's main points, including the bus stations, the Daira, the university campus, the downtown area and the Public Garden.
- It does not serve the west or the south of the city, so check whether your destination falls inside its coverage before relying on it.
- Because it links the bus stations with the centre and the campus, it is a practical option if you arrive by coach or are staying near the university.
Train
Sidi Bel Abbès has a railway station, and rail is the straightforward way to reach other major cities in the region.
- Trains run from Sidi Bel Abbès to Oran, Tlemcen, Béchar and Saïda.
- Oran lies to the north and Tlemcen to the west, making both feasible as day trips or onward legs of a longer journey.
- A rail link toward Morocco passes through the city, but it has been discontinued for political reasons, so it is not a usable border crossing.
Buses and Other Public Transport
The tramway line connects to the city's bus stations, which makes switching between bus and tram relatively simple. Sidi Bel Abbès is also well connected to other Algerian cities by road, and the West-East Route passes near the city, so long-distance coaches are a normal way in and out. For getting around within the city itself, the tramway and taxis are the more practical choices; buses are best thought of as the link to the bus stations and to destinations beyond the tram's coverage.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are particularly useful for the gaps the tramway leaves: the west and south of the city, outlying neighbourhoods, and trips at hours when you would rather not wait. Agree on the fare or confirm the meter before setting off, as you would in any Algerian city.
Walking
Central Sidi Bel Abbès is walkable in the areas a visitor is most likely to spend time. The historic core was reshaped in the 1930s, when much of the old city walls were demolished and wide boulevards and squares replaced the traditional quarters — these broad streets make walking around the centre comfortable.
- Place 1er Novembre (formerly Place Carnot) is a central square and a natural orientation point for a walk.
- The town hall, built in the historical French pattern and formerly a cathedral, is another central landmark worth folding into a stroll.
- The city sits astride both banks of the Sig River, so expect to cross the river if you move between sides of town.
- For anything beyond the centre — the university campus, the bus stations, or the outer neighbourhoods — use the tram or a taxi rather than walking.
Getting from the Airport into the City
This is the one part of the journey that needs planning ahead.
- Sidi Bel Abbès Airport (IATA: BFW) is the city's own airport, but it is not for public use — you cannot book a commercial flight into it.
- The closest international airport is Oran Es Sénia, near Oran to the north. This is where you should expect to fly in.
- From Oran, continue to Sidi Bel Abbès by road or rail. The two cities are linked by both, and the railway station in Sidi Bel Abbès is the arrival point if you take the train.
Practical Summary
- Within the centre: walk — the boulevards and central squares are made for it.
- Across the city: take the tramway, which links the bus stations, Daira, university campus, downtown and Public Garden.
- West and south of the city: the tram does not reach these areas, so use a taxi.
- To other cities: trains run to Oran, Tlemcen, Béchar and Saïda; long-distance buses also serve the city via the road network.
- Arriving by air: fly into Oran Es Sénia, then travel to Sidi Bel Abbès by road or rail — the local airport is not open to public traffic.
