Getting Around Biskra
Biskra is the main city of the Zibans region and the administrative capital of Biskra Province, sitting at the northern edge of the Sahara where routes from the north meet routes into the desert. That crossroads role shapes how you move around: there is no metro and no visitor-use tramway, so getting around relies on walking in the centre, taxis, local buses, and the national rail and long-distance bus networks for anything further afield.
Walking
If you aren't in a hurry, walking around the city centre, the university area and the local shops and bazaar is easy and pleasant. Central errands in daylight are very manageable on foot.
- Walking works well for the city centre, the universities and the bazaar.
- Take a taxi instead for late returns, during the summer heat, when carrying luggage, and for the university area, the RN46 bus-station side and airport trips.
Rail
Biskra sits on the SNTF (Algerian national rail) network, with Gare de Biskra located close to the city centre — a short ride away. It is the southern part of the Algerian rail system, and trains link the city toward Constantine, Batna, Algiers and other Algerian city pairs. Biskra appears as a station option in SNTF's train-search form, so schedules should be checked by date before you travel.
- Use the train for intercity journeys rather than for getting around within Biskra.
- Check SNTF schedules for your specific travel date, as timings vary.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Public transport — buses, trams and trains — is described as the best way to get around the city, though in practice Biskra itself has no metro or tramway, so local movement is by bus, taxi and walking. The main intercity bus station is Gare routière Biskra, run by the SOGRAL agency, with its official address in Commune El Hadjeb, Daïra de Biskra, on the RN46 / El Hadjeb side of the city. It is not walkable from central hotels, so plan a taxi transfer to reach it.
- SOGRAL operates the bus station and lists extensive grande ligne (long-distance), moyenne ligne (medium-distance) and petite ligne (short-distance) services.
- Long-distance routes include Batna, Constantine, M'Sila, Algiers, El Oued, Touggourt, Ouargla, Tébessa, Khenchela, Tolga, Sidi Okba and nearby towns.
- Local bus fares are inexpensive, in the region of 30–60 DZD.
- On arrival by long-distance bus, confirm whether the vehicle terminates at the SOGRAL station or at another local stop.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are a good way to get around because they offer more destinations than public transport, but they are more expensive. They are also the primary link between the airport, the rail station, the bus station and hotels, and the standard first-arrival option when you have luggage or arrive after dark.
Ride-hailing apps Yassir and Heetch operate in Algeria, but supply varies by city, pickup point and hour, so ordinary taxis or a hotel-arranged car are the reliable backup.
- Short city taxi trips typically run around 300–700 DZD; cross-city trips around 700–1,800 DZD.
- For airport pickups, confirm whether the price includes waiting, luggage and night timing.
- For regional trips, quote the whole job rather than per-kilometre.
- Private car transfers to places such as Tolga or Sidi Okba fall in a higher range, and longer regional transfers (El Oued, Touggourt, Ouargla, Batna, Constantine) are arranged by quote.
- On Sahara-side routes, heat, road stops, prayer and meal breaks, vehicle comfort, night driving and return-driver needs all affect the real cost and fatigue.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Biskra – Mohamed Khider Airport (IATA: BSK, ICAO: DAUB) lies south of the city near the RN3 airport approach, a short road transfer from the centre. Only two airlines operate to Biskra — Tassili Airlines and Air Algérie — and they serve international destinations. Air Algérie flies to Algiers, Lyon, Paris CDG and Paris ORLY; Tassili serves Algiers.
A taxi or an arranged pickup is the standard way to reach the city from the airport, especially with luggage or after dark.
- Airport to central Biskra: roughly 1,200–2,500 DZD by taxi.
- Airport to Gare de Biskra: roughly 1,200–2,500 DZD.
- Airport to the SOGRAL station / El Hadjeb side: roughly 1,800–3,500 DZD.
- Alternative airports for flight shopping include Batna, Sétif and Constantine, but these turn the trip into a long road transfer.
Choosing Where to Base Yourself
For short stays, central Biskra is the safest default. The airport side suits early flights, the station side suits train-heavy trips, and the RN46 / El Hadjeb side suits an overnight before a long-distance bus departure.
- Currency is the Algerian dinar (DZD).
- Movement in Biskra is by taxi, local bus, walking in central areas, rail for intercity travel, and long-distance buses or private cars for regional routes.
