Getting Around Tizi Ouzou
Tizi Ouzou sits in the heart of Kabylie, in the valley of the Assif N Sébaou and surrounded by mountains, with the old High City backed against the slopes of Mount Belloua. The city spreads across a valley floor and up hillsides, so how you move around depends a lot on whether you are staying in the lower town or up in the Haute Ville. Public transit here consists of buses, taxis (both shared and private), a railway system, and a cable car; a car is not strictly necessary for getting around.
By cable car
The most distinctive way to move around Tizi Ouzou is the Télécabine, the city's cable car. It is a genuinely useful option rather than just a sightseeing ride, because it links the lower multimodal hub with the upper town and the heights above it.
- Kaf Naadja Station — the multimodal station, where the cable car connects with other transport.
- New Town Station
- Station Stage 1re Novembre
- M'Douha Station — serving the Haute Ville (Upper Town).
- Sidi Belloua Hospital Station
- Station Redjaouna — the highest stop, at the village of Redjaouna on Mount Belloua.
The first section, connecting the Multimodal Station to the Haute Ville, entered service in 2020. Later sections extend the line up to Sidi Belloua Hospital and then on to the village of Redjaouna. If your destination is uphill — the old town, the hospital, or Redjaouna — the cable car saves you a steep climb.
By train
Tizi Ouzou has a railway station, the Gare de Tizi Ouzou, in the city centre. Services are operated by the Société Nationale des Transports Ferroviaires (SNTF), and there are direct connections to Algiers as well as regular services to Béjaïa and other major Algerian cities. Trains are described as modern and comfortable, with air conditioning and onboard amenities. Schedules can be irregular, so it is worth checking the timetable in advance rather than turning up and assuming a departure. For a visitor, the train is the natural choice for a day trip to Algiers or Béjaïa.
By bus
Buses are the most common form of public transport in the city. They are operated by the Société de Transport de la Wilaya de Tizi Ouzou (STWTO), and routes cover both the city itself and its outskirts. Service runs from early morning until late at night, which makes buses a practical option for an evening out as well as daytime errands. Fares are paid per journey and are inexpensive. Expect crowding at peak hours and occasional delays. Buses are considered generally safe, including for women travelling alone and for children commuting to school.
By taxi
Taxis come in two forms, and knowing the difference will save you money and confusion.
- Shared taxis, known locally as "clandos", run on fixed routes and carry up to four passengers. Each passenger pays a fraction of the total fare, making them the cheaper option. You may share with strangers and wait until the vehicle fills up.
- Private taxis offer door-to-door service at a higher cost, which is the better choice if you have luggage, are in a hurry, or are heading somewhere off the shared routes.
In both cases, agree on the fare before you set off.
On foot
Walking works well in the flatter parts of the city, but Tizi Ouzou is built in a valley and climbs the slopes of Mount Belloua, so the old High City and the upper neighbourhoods involve real gradients. If your destination is uphill, consider the cable car or a taxi rather than a long climb, and bear in mind that the cable car itself is the link between the lower multimodal hub and the upper town.
Getting there from the airport
Tizi Ouzou has no airport of its own. The nearest airports are Algiers and Béjaïa, and both operate international flights daily.
- Algiers airport is served by a long list of carriers, including Air Algérie (a hub), Tassili Airlines (a hub), Air France, British Airways, Iberia, KLM, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, ITA Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Egypt Air, Tunis Air, Royal Air Maroc, Saudia, Royal Jordanian, Transavia, Vueling, Volotea, Flynas, ASL France, Jet Air Fly, Tuifly Belgium, Nouvelair, Syrianair, Iberia Regional, and Air Canada (seasonal).
- Béjaïa airport is served by Air Algérie, Tassili, Aigle Azur, Tuifly, and Transavia.
From either airport, the onward journey to Tizi Ouzou is by road or rail. Tizi Ouzou is an important road junction, and the highway from Algiers comes here, so a taxi, shared taxi, or bus from Algiers is straightforward. By rail, the train station in the city centre has direct connections to Algiers, making the train a comfortable option if your arrival point connects to the network. Whichever airport you choose, plan your onward leg in advance: check train timetables ahead of time, since schedules can be irregular, and agree taxi fares before departure.
